In terms of processing power usage, and supporting large numbers of users. Which of the forums are better? Discusware, Vbulletin, phpBB etc? ANy comments on Discusware especially?

Vbulletin seems to be the best. WHT uses it. :)

Haven't used Discusware, of the other two - vbulletin rules. Or if you want a free one - of course phpBB.

As with every forum software, it depends on how large you want to go.

phpBB is well coded and free, it can be optimized for an extremely large forum situation.

I think phpBB runs well in a large environment, Webhostingtalk.com uses vBulletin but, see my example below.

http://gambino.go-gaia.com/forum/ uses phpBB and they have the following as of this post:

"We have 531198 registered users."
"Our forums have a total of 64026680 articles"
"In total there are 9717 users online :: 8264 Registered, 519 Hidden and 934 Guests"

If that doesn't speak volumes for phpBB, I don't know what does. :D

Been using Discus for around 3 years, and it is the most robust forum out there for moderator actions and management.

It lacks many of the bells and whistles that many new forum owners go for, but are rarely used.

I think Kevin should be coming out with version 5.0 soon, which will add more MySQL options and the like.

One thing I do like, is all the messages are stored on normal HTML pages, and the database and membership is on a MySQL database, its great for search engine spidering.

My current membership is over 7,000 active members, and it holds strong.

phpbb has to many security issues in my opinion

loads of sites we defaced in hte past month due to the privmsg exploit

vb seems more secure to me, also, i think vb runs better under high load.

Keeping my fingers cross and waiting for the mySQL version.....
Prob is during Searching the CGI really slows the server down. Will the new version help?

boonchuan,

Discus always acts like it will take a while for the new version to come out, but progress in my experience is much faster than is stated on the company website.

(1) thing you can do, which will significantly lower the CPU resources for searches is lower the results generated in the results thru the option manager.

This 1 thing will help out greatly. Also have cached templates selected.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned IPB in here - one of the best IMO.
