View Full Version : Switching from UBB to vB
Hi everyone. Based on what I've heard, people start to change from UBB to vB lately. How can you do it without losing all old threads? Do our members have to register again? For example, this website's been changed to vB, please tell me what was the proccess. Thank you.
Nam,
kunal 10-20-2000, 06:18 PM I think VB has an in-built data transfer module, which lets you migrate from UBB to VB by a click of a button :) So you shouldnt have any problems.
This forum is an example of one that was transfered.
I've just found an Ultra Board at http://www.ub2k.com. Looks pretty nice. I don't know if any of you has experienced with it? The price is pretty good too ($39.95).
kunal 10-24-2000, 04:02 PM Well, I would always recommend a person to go with PHP rather then Perl. It puts less load on the server :). If you dun mind perl you could check out http://www.yabb.org. Its a free perl board :)
Marty 10-24-2000, 04:17 PM Nam,
I have looked at http://www.ub2k.com also and really liked what I saw. I have not purchased it yet, but if I do I will let you know what I think.
bob35 10-24-2000, 05:06 PM This board is much slower than another I go to that is a UBB with a lot of traffic, and I'm on a T1???
phatpunk 10-24-2000, 05:58 PM I have a UB2k for my site, I like it a lot.... you can see mine at http://forum.phatpunk.com I use mySQL, in case u wanted to know.. If you have any questions, just ask me.

Racin' Rob 10-24-2000, 07:05 PM I just finished upgrading my message board from UBB to vBulletin.
The install and import of UBB went without a hitch. All users, threads, messages, and archives were all imported properly.
You can not import your style settings from UBB, but, depending on what you want, it is't a real long job changing them to what you want.
vB is great and works well.

I've only found that vBulletin Boards are faster, but of course this depends on the server serving the pages and the network, etc. A fast board on a 486 served via a 56K dialup won't be faster than a UBB, heh.
I should also add that this board has been having some minor niggly issues with the Alabanza server and also MySQL connections.
Annette, if you read this, can you make a note to possibly increase the MySQL connections required? Or maybe construct a nice little script to check if extra connections are required and then increase the no. available (if possible). Thanks.
vB is generally faster, but then again it depends on the server config. You can only make a performance comparison if the hardware and network conditions are exactly the same.
