So far I've come across PHPNuke, PostNuke and EZPublish for content management.

What are peoples' experiences with these for:

ease of install
ease of upgrade/patching
ease of management
webhost friendliness/resource usage
search engine friendliness

Are there any others to consider?

Well I personally like postNuke over phpNuke. phpNuke is controlled by one person while there is a whole group doing postNuke. Both are simple to install and get working.

My biggest issue with the *Nuke*'s is that they all look the same.

Check out www.hotscripts.com and there is a whole category for PHP portal scripts.

1. Postnuke
2. PHPNuke
3. EZPublish

When it comes to installation Postnuke (http://www.postnuke.com) is by far the easiest to install. It comes with its own install script where you simply enter your database details and then whammo bammo you got yourself a portal system.

I first used PHPNuke (http://www.phpnuke.org) back in the day, and I just recently upgraded one of my sites to the newest version. Whats nice in the newer version is that you can use html templates to easily change the look of your website, without having to know php. (Unlike the previous versions). Its semi easy to install, easier with phpMyAdmin. Upgrade is simple, you get an upgrade script packaged in the new version.

I haven't ever installed EZPublish (http://developer.ez.no/article/static/7) . I have downloaded it, and it looked far too complicating, installation wise. It looks like a nice program though. I hear that they recently have developed an installation script, which should make things easier.. but thats about all I can say bout it. ;)

My personal exp with Ezpublish:

The script is so impressive, carrying all kind of portal site like poll, quiz, forum (not really good), ad, e-commerce... and tons more. However, getting it to work is the pain in the azz, especially if you host your site shared-server. The first must-have module is ImageMagick, while most of the host start to have it installed, it's so difficult to find the libxml, the second important module.

I've installed Ezpublish on hostrocket.com, hostmatters.com, aletia.com. None of them works because they don't have libxml installed, not to mention hostroket doesn't even have ImageMagick. The only place I got that working is focalhosting (http://focalhosting.com) . Alex is impressive in helping me install those modules, very nice and helpful guy. The only negative about focalhosting is you can't create database yourself, and I hate emailling him everytime I need to change pass or create a new one.

Eventhough I got it work in focalhosting.com's server, the speed still very very SLOW . It's not focalhosting server that slow, because I've tried with other hosts also, it's script itself. If you check the Ezpublish's site itself, the speed is a little slow too, but can be accepted due to their site is located in Norway.

Anyway, I finally gave it up after a month trying to installed and got it working perfectly, then failed to display images for some reasons, probably my fault in setting path incorrectly. Another reason was I failed to protect the site.ini, which contains database information that can be downloaded by visitor ==> serious security hole (yes they do have methods to protect it, but didn't work to me :( ). Support is none unless you pay huge money ($139-$899) a year to access different level of support (http://ez.no/shop/support) in the paid forums (which is ridiculous if you read what's the different between those). And looks like they start to charge money with Pro license, what's up with that?. Overall I rate it 6.5/10.

My thinking from advanced-newbie's view. Of course there are people that have no problem with it, but they must be real webmasters. Funny thing about it I've heard is their site address http://ez.no ==> Easy? NO :D. Again, if you want to try Ezpublish, go with focalhosting, I'm not here to advertise for them, but that the only host that you could give ezpublish a try.

I tried a few. Slashcode, Everything, EZPublish.....

Then it was between PostNuke and PHPNuke. PHPNuke won for now because I find it easy to work with. As I become a decent programmer PostNuke may be in my future. I find new modules all over for it.

Sorry,

I believe phpNuke is one person. postNuke is a group.

Aloha

EZ publish is great but a pain to work and a few glitches if it was easier to install it might take the lead
I also tried out phpnuke and it would give errrors every once in a while mostly DB errors
still better than nothing for free and the glitches were a refresh and sometimes it worked ??

got to check out the postnuke ;)

As far as I know, Aletia have installed the libxml module on one of their servers recently and should be installing it on the others (if all goes ok and there is demand for it). This came about due to quite a few people requesting it for this purpose (EZPublish)

nobody here has mentioned phpwebsite? I've heard it has very clean code, somebody even considers to switch over from postnuke.
