View Full Version : How'd you get your nicknames/company name?

As title. Here's my explanation:
My real name is Andrew. As a child, I didn't like the name Andy and I didn't like the name Drew, so one time when I was about 9 and playing basketball with people at school, someone shortened it to Rew. Then Rewdog, but most friends and family call me Rew now :) .

As for the company name, eMegaWeb, it started out as a hobby called Mega Online. We looked into a domain name and seeing MegaOnline, MegaWeb.com was taken, we just added an "e". Mega Online grew into eMegaWeb.com which we made into an internet portal. As one of the features of the portal we resold hosting. Well the hosting took off and we moved into just Hosting as our jobs, at eMegaWeb.net and we are extremely happy with it :).

How about yall?

I probably spent almost 6 weeks straight trying to think of a username. It was a very long, intense, grueling process. As you can see, the end result turned out very well.

The name "InterSurge" just sort of came to me when I was trying to think up a name for a new hosting company. Since it was going to be an Internet company, I went ahead and started out with the "Inter" prefix. After going through a couple of names, I finally thought up InterSurge. I thought it was pretty catchy, and my partner agreed, so we went with it.

I was thinking of names for a web dev & design site, but they were boring and cliche, nothing catchy, so I asked my friend what a cool name would be. Playing in a punk rock band, he was heavily influenced by this. He remember that some other people we knew, Matt and Rob had a little band that they put together for parties at college. Matt would play guitar, and Rob would tell weird ass stories in a musical type fashion. They called themselves Gunboat, so thats whats my friend suggested. Cool name I thought, and my favorite color being green I said, "Green Gunboat" and there you have it folks.

"Alchiba" is the primary star in the constellation Corvus, the crow. I use it in remembrance of a dear friend who is now lost. The meaning is known only to the two of us, and that pleases me.

LinkStream is a term from the old PDP/11 days. Used in homage of "batching" code many moons ago.

Well, way back when I first got a decent computer (about 3 years ago) I was slowely pursuaded to get ICQ (Mind you I knew next to nothing about computers, I was slow to do anything)

Of course in having ICQ I'd need some sort of alias as well, thinking and thinking I remembered a commercial for a movie I never actually saw...(Relic)

Unfortunatley Relic really doesn't describe me (being fairly young) so I changed it to Relyc soon after.

Nine-One came pretty oddly. When I started getting into the internet I got drawn to art communities (no pun intended) and started talking to some specific people. Two of them were the original people that started up Nine-One with me.

We needed to think of a name, and by complete chance we learnt that all 3 of us had the same birthday 09/01 (September 1st), hence came Nine-One.

(If you see 'NineOne' on any art or gaming forums, that's very likely me, if you see 'Relyc' it's probably not)

I've also had some pretty funny mispronunciations of my name. Most commonly, RedDog, like the beer. But other times its more creative, like RedWong

We wanted to call our business VisionQuest but we were unable to obtain the domain..... In our search for a solution FutureQuest.net became available (yes in the same week) so we snagged it.... It was months later that the .com version became available. Now we've got the trio and are quite happy with the name :D

In my case, it's IRIX's fault. IRIX (at least seven years ago) only supported 8 character user names, so when I entered university they gave me a standard FLLLLLLL user name.

These days, of course, people get to either pick their own user names or get given firstname.lastname aliases... how things have changed.

ProSam

ProSam comes from the integration of my company's name (Pro D'ZYNES) and my name (Samuel). Nobody really calls me ProSam I just use it for my username because it's kind of rare. My nickname from childhood is Samuelito spanish for little Sam. :D They still call me Samuelito even though I'm not that little anymore. http://www.lhdb.com/sammy

Pro D'ZYNES came from always wanting to be a professional at something and designing was my passion. The actual spelling of D'ZYNES used to be D'ZINES but people would read it like they would mag-a-ZINE, so I changed to a Y. I thought the D' was kind of a catchy way of spelling it so I decided on that.

And the rest is history...:)

I'd find it a bit hard to explain my username, got it form Neuromancer. I'm a big sci fi fiction fan especially when it comes to books.

To those of you not aquainted, ever wondered where terms like cyberspace and the matrix came from ?? ;)

If you have the time, read on.....

http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/science_fiction/neuromancer.html

"'Voices....We monitor many frequencies. We listen always. Came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. It played us a mighty dub.'
'Call 'em Winter Mute,' said the other, making it two words..."

"'I'm not Wintermute now.'
' So what are you.'
'I'm the matrix, Case.'
'Where's that get you?'
'Nowhere. Everywhere. I'm the sum total of the works, the whole show.'
'That what 3Jane's mother wanted?'
'No. She couldn't imagine what I'd be like.' The yellow smile widened.
'So what's the score? How are things different? You running the world now? You God?'
'Things aren't different. Things are just things."

As to company name, well, I havent started yet, but I've got the names.....

getweb

Mine came about in perhaps an unprofessional manner, certainly unintentional. Well, my first venture was DigitalDorm.com back in 1997 which we found doing random queries while sitting around my dorm. We had three or four webcams and things like web-enabled desklamps and traffic lights going back when webcams were cool. Now everybody does it and the site kinda fizzled out. I still like that name :)

But towards the end of my degree I wanted something more professional-sounding. Once again random fate worked with me and I got GetWebspace.com while bumming around a hall computer lab looking for "cool" names. It was still a juvenile project at the time but it's really snowballed from there. Now I have GetWebspace.com, GetWebEmail.com, GetTracked.com, GetWebStore.com and GetWebCart.com :D So yeah I'm the one hogging them all. I wish I had time to develop half of them. Soon...

[can I list all those names in here? aw, it's just the lounge]
