I would reccomend sticking to the .pkg
You downloaded the MySQL .pkg from cobalt, and then, from the Cobalt GUI you installed it, correct?
What sort of errors are you getting?

many thanks for the replys guys...
ok...heres the story...
I installed the MySQL pkg via the gui control panel...but...it didn't show up in the table of installed packages.
However, when I installed neomail, openssh and php via the gui, they all showed up in the list of installed packages.
So, I tried to unintall MySQL but could not find the 'uninstaller' file.
Finally I decided to take the risk and reinstall it again from the gui and now it gives the error of: "Problem installing package component: MySQL-3.23.37-1.i386.rpm"
when I try to locate MySQL on the server I get the following results:...
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql
/etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K90mysql
/etc/rc.d/rc1.d/K90mysql

It doesn't look like MySQL is running, but try this
mysqladmin status
and
rpm -q MySQL
Should give me some more clues...

this is what I get:
[root local]# mysqladmin status
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!
and:
[root local]# rpm -q MySQL
MySQL-3.23.37-1
any ideas..??
mysql is not running
look in the process list for mysql -- it is probably not there
also, using the rpms to install will put the databases on / partition, which will fill up quickly.
Try starting mysql
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start
Then try to connect.
I use the pkg files for MySQL or compile the program myself. The raq-specific pkgs put the databases in /home so that the / partition does not fill up and cause a kernel panic.

Just to let you know what you typed,
rpm -q MySQL just told you what, if any, MySQL rpm you have installed (-q for query)
mysqladmin is a tool that tells you all sorts of things about MySQL.
Like the fact that it's not running :)
Start it up and see what happens!
