A friend said that you can't and that you can only install it 6 times on your computer is that true? I was looking at the XP box today in the store and it didn't say anything about that.

But this is only for the home version. Pro version, you can do whatever :stickout ;) michaeln 11-16-2001, 09:53 PM Yeah but you can only put the pro version on one computer. I didn't upgrade my system because they wanted me to buy a serperate license for each computer at $170 per computer. Problem was I had to buy a minimum of five license and I only have four computers to put it on. But then again if you read the EULA on the previous versions of windows you was only supposed to put each copy on ONE computer. But who actually bought a seperate copy for each computer? microsol 11-16-2001, 10:16 PM This should be possible without problems if you have install disk number 1. See attached photo. ..        chuckt101 11-16-2001, 11:48 PM Originally posted by michaeln Yeah but you can only put the pro version on one computer. How is this possibly monitored, given the fact that no registration is required? DanielP 11-17-2001, 12:19 AM I would assume they probabbly add a tag to the master boot record of the hard-drive your installing it on so it knows how many times its been installed... easily clearable of you know what your doing.. but I can't think of any other way they could know..... michaeln 11-17-2001, 02:49 AM The OS must be activated or it will stop working after 40 days. There are two ways to activate it. One. It will do it through the internet, Two. You have to call in for the activation code. They keep track of how many times you have activated it on their computers. Michael Honu 11-17-2001, 10:03 AM Aloha suposed there is a version maybe for teachers or ??? multiple lic version that does nto run the checks at all you can just install it and install it on as many as you want you would just have to have a lic if they checked ?? same as office I think it is the edu version ???? webfors 11-17-2001, 12:33 PM Originally posted by aragon How is this possibly monitored, given the fact that no registration is required? I've been using Pro on two computers here at home and I even setup XP's 'home network' with the two computers and it works great, 5 weeks and counting :D Seer 11-17-2001, 02:08 PM Originally posted by Honu Aloha suposed there is a version maybe for teachers or ??? multiple lic version that does nto run the checks at all you can just install it and install it on as many as you want you would just have to have a lic if they checked ?? same as office I think it is the edu version ???? I heard about a "Corporate" version that doesn't have the registration or license restrictions. Not sure of the exact details, but it's been the one that's being pirated most. XTStrike 11-17-2001, 02:41 PM let me add my say. Windows Product Activation (WPA) is the most stupid idea in existence, I have proven it by checking a few things out, i have legal copies of windows xp and office xp and wanted to see if i could get hold of this software easily in warez/pirate. Windows XP - got hold of that after... well, it was given to me by a friend, didnt take too long to get, i actually got it before i wanted it, hehe Office XP - hmm this was a little more difficult, but after about 20 minutes the download had started, incomming office xp cracked version, no activation or license key. ok, so thats how difficult product activation is? if you really want to do it then lets face it the procedure is simple, the only thing thats going to work is to make people "want" to buy the software, not bully them into buying it by saying its "uncrackable" hah the second anyone says that then 3 million people worldwide work hell bent on a mission to crack the software. we have, DVD's, Microsoft WPA, License KEYS, Hardware Decryption Addons, Yearly Activation, Web Authentication theyre all useless, nobody has ever released anything that cant be got around with a little bit of team work! -XT Honu 11-17-2001, 05:16 PM Aloha Xstrike very good points ;) I still say trying to do things like this only fuels hackers mroe and gives them a game to play where as it makes it annoying for the honest people that just want hassle free stuff the fact the code is in there will make it that much mroe prone to crashing and that much bigger to install MS should listen and start making for the masses rather than protecting form the few. it only hurts the little guy. Dave22 11-17-2001, 05:51 PM so with the Pro version of XP i can install it on more than one computer? Is that with the upgrade Pro version or the full? I have 3 computers and i don't want to buy 3 copies of it! I'm always restarting my computer it wouldn't take me long to reach the 6 times. The Prohacker 11-17-2001, 06:06 PM Actually, you just have to modify one file with a cracking program to totally defeat the WPA. From then on, the system won't call out to MS for activation. I haven't looked but, I'm sure that one file could be included in the cabs of the WinXP CD and be distro'd that way. But not sure.... It really is kinda funny, the software was cracked before it ever came out..... |
