Actually, I'm more of a girl-next-door fellow myself, and this gal just doesn't qualify.

I've been listening to "Whenever, Wherever" for the past few days. The yodeling-like sound in it is fun to listen to. :)

Well, where are you from. What I find so weird that people are giving her a 1. Come on who have you seen move like that. I love the way she sings. I have all her CDs she is a really good singer and you can learn a lot from her music. The thing is that you guys are now starting to know her so you really dont know what a great artist she really is. Give her time...time...

I'm sorry to see what the industry has done to her. Dying her hair blond is akin to what Michael Jackson has done in trying to turn himself into a white girl.

Shakira Mebarak is a Columbian of Arabic descent, and like many successful Columbian musicians was popular all over South America the year I was there ('95-'96). I liked her album "Pies Descalzos" enough to purchase it while I was living there -- the only pop album I bought that year, although I came home with several dozen CDs (the rest folk music).

She was a talented enough young singer but rather typical of the so-called "world music" scene in that she could have been singing any pop music anywhere in the world, and except for the lyrics you would never know where she was from. Now she's writing in English. Cultural imperialism at its worst, in my eyes (and ears), with all the regional "accents" removed from the lyrics, the instrumentation, and the arrangements. I'd rather listen to something both more challenging and less homogenous. Pablum for the ears.

I've loved Shakira's music since 97, but Deb does have a point since the song I enjoyed on her site (Whereever Whenever - full length video) wasn't up to par from what I expect of her.

The song in spanish is so much better.
