View Full Version : How do I revert a RAQ4 running 550 OS back to a RAQ4?

I've inherited a RAQ4 running the 550 OS (well it was!).

I tried to use a RAQ4 restore CD to revert it back to being a RAQ4, it went through the restore procedure but when it rebooted it said "boot failed, loading from rom" and started to go through the restore process again.

I then tried to get it back up and running as a 550 and the same thing happened.

So now I've got a RAQ with no operating system. Anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks.

Also interested in 'down grading' - want to use a raq4 that has been upgraded to 550 as a SOHO file server without installing Samba or having to get people to use ftp. Belive Raq will run Qube3 OS as well?

Main question if the kernel has been upgraded to run 550 does it have to reverted to original?

Thanks anyone.

Are you the same person??
Anyway, you shouldn't have just placed the Restore CD directly into loading the OS back...
The RaQ4 and the RaQ550 are running different ROM images... and what you have done is "KILL" your unit :bawling: :bawling:
Try loading the RaQ550 OS back and then download the RaQ4 ROM image to flash it to a RaQ4.
Hopefully it would work... if not... its RIP.... unless you for a new chip and a soldering gun :P

No not the same person.

I was cautions about the whole exercise, particularly because of the ROM's differences. I am quite happy with the unit as a 550, just don't need the extras of the 550 on this particular unit, but do need a simple system to allow users within a LAN to access files. From what I read Raq4 will allow drive mapping (like qube2) while 550 does not as it is designed for web hosting.

Thanks for responding ans how would I flash a ROM?

Here is a link on a FaQ
http://the.taoofmac.com/space/HOWTO/Upgrade%20a%20RAQ3%20to%20RAQ550

The ROM for the RaQ3 and RaQ4 should be the same.

Thanks,

How can I best check the ROM/Firmware version on the machine. I have seen it displayed on the LCD some time in the past but can't find out how to get it displayed again.

Firmware display.... Never seen that before unless it was configured to show it.

I can rember the display vividly - just not the exact numbers! I have a feeling I had reset the CMOS.

Never mind, more or less given up on the idea of reverting it to RaQ4 and installed Samba instead, probably a better idea anyway. At least the file sharing is not tied to RaQ OS and is up to date.

neileb, any luck with your machine?

To check your CMOS version, do this as root:

cmos -c romrev

Why not add samba to your 550? The 550's os can be updated and secured. The Raq 3/4 OS has several security issues.

Also if you are just talking about web-publishing, then look into adding mod_dav to your 550.

I concur - upgrade the Samba RPMS (which should already be on the RaQ!) and use it that way.

If you want to put it back to RaQ 4, reload the 550 OS, then manually downgrade the ROM to 4.3.38. Once you're sure that it's in place, you can reboot the RaQ and boot from a RaQ 4 OSRCD...

If you use Samba on any RaQ, there won't be a UI for configuring shares like the Qube has, but that shouldn't be too hard to handle... you could even use SWAT if you wanted, but I've heard people recommend against leaving that exposed on a public system... (some only enable it via shell for a short time to use it, then disable it again)
