Rackshack http://www.rackshack.net seems to have no deals on offer at their mement. But they do have a picture of a shiny new building they are moving to.
I want to see what their new non_Cobalt offering looks like.

Well, if they're moving, I would consider that expanding :)

Rackshack uses this cheap cognent pipe available in major nocs
expanding throughtout the US.
for ISP's the price is $3000.00 for 100mbps bandwidth.
Then resellers have to rent racks etc out the noc there also
but anyhow...
My question is:
I have heard that Cognent Has pipe that is extremely high
in latency from some very reliable sources, <-- not worth mentioning, just some people in the pipe business..
I am looking for someone with hands on knowledge of
their pipe, I am considering relocating business to Illinois
where cognent is available, my costs will skyrocket almost triple the cost for what space I use now as far as rack costs etc go
but the pipe amount just seems to good to be true...... I can then get 90% more bandwidth How is this pipe really?
I will have other pipe alternatives in this building but I dont it can compare at this time to Cognents prices.

If your question is on Cogent and not rackshack and their expansion go do a search or make a new thread. There have been plenty of discusions on this.

Coegnt recently acquired netrail, netrails will help a bit as it will add more peers with their network. But for 3000.00 thye need most of the traffic to flow through their internal network as once it hits another provider they peer with, they start loosing money. Because even large lines such as OC12's costs a lot more than 30.00/mbps which is what cogent is selling their bandiwith for and in some places for less then this. So you cant really expect the same level of speed or latency as a traditional tier 1 company such as uunet. But then again your getting 100mbps for a tiny fraction of a cost of tier 1 providers, so i think a little latency is forgiveable.
THe real question you need to ask is whether you need the absolute best, also the stability of cogent is in question, although they have alot of funding, their network is extremely expensive, and whether they can make money at all on such cheap transit has yet to be determined. They have yet to make a profit, and it will probably be a VERY long time before they even come close to breaking even.
Certainly i hope they stay in the ball game... but todays industry isnt the same as yesterdays.

Rackshack uses cogent so its not inapprop. for comphost to bring them up in this thread. As the performance of cogent is directly related to the performance, and new services of rackshack.

What makes me mad is that people act like ALL they use is cogent. They have 500Mbpsof non cogent bandwith. Its not like they are JUST using cogent.

Their network graphs do seem to indicate that they are routing the vast majority of their outbound traffic through Cogent, however. Which implies that they are using the other links for customer routes only (ie, direct Verio customer, goes through Verio).
So they still have redundancy, but they are focused squarely on using that cheap Cogent bandwidth.
All IMHO.

Doing a traceroute to a customer RaQ 4i at Rackshack, traffic is going through either Time Warner or Verio (changes from day to day). As far as I can tell, they're balancing their traffic off of all their connections.

I believe that any traffic into RackShack is being routed through their traditional suppliers.
I just did a traceroute from my RackShack raq to an outside IP and it is going through Cogent.
I think they are testing the link and seeing what it does before they start offering hosting on it.
So any raq at rackshack is going off the Cogent line right now, as far as traffic from the server is concerned.
But this is all from their current location. I have no idea what sort of connectivity is in place at the new NOC they just bought.
