View Full Version : Namebargain.com
scottlaw 10-20-2000, 12:14 AM I just registered my name at Namebargain to try them out and I was shocked to find out that you are not allowed the edit the name servers for the domain that you "purchased" in the management area.
I have not opened up a ticket yet to see if this is true and if the only way to change the name servers is to upgrade to register.com... Does anyone now if this is correct?

diyoha 10-20-2000, 12:18 AM That is what I have heard. But I have no solid evidence either way.

DanielP 10-20-2000, 12:29 AM Ouch....................................
Glad I didn't decide to try them out.
I'll give the thread a small left turn :)
Which registrar is like Joker.com but better (and cheaper)
Exchange rates vary my domain cost from about 10.30 to 11.00 a domain lol, not much but I'd prefer an american company to avoid currency flux's :).
for 5 of my domains I used namebargain.com
Talk about frustrating...I tried them out when they had $5.99 domain names. At that time there was no manage your domain. Everything had to be done through e-mail. What a pain.
Now that they have the panel, you can change the contact information, and that's about it. If you want to change the nameservers, just open a ticket and they will change them for you, no problem. Except that it takes them about 3 days to do it.
They are working on getting the manage your domain to be the same as register.com's, but until then, it has to be done this way.
diyoha 10-20-2000, 12:41 AM That is actually not too bad. As long as there is a way to make the changes, and as long as they are working on a decent solution

I also registered three domains via namebargain.com. At the time there was no account manager at all. A few days ago they enabled a limited version. I was a bit worried upon finding out that the account manager did not provide any ability to modify any dns info.
I opened a support ticket and asked them to change the dns for the three domains to my name server at DI, it took a few days but they did make the changes and notified me when they had done so.
So, yes a bit slow but handled professionally.

i still prefer dotster...
jonelin 10-20-2000, 02:33 AM domainmonger.com
i don't mind paying $17. it is worth it!!! they rock!
GordonH 10-20-2000, 04:57 AM I still prefer Joker.com
Yesterday I paid $10.30 as the Euro is really on the slide.
I have considered moving to enom.com. They offer a reseller rate at $10 with name servers etc but at least with Joker.com I know what i am doing and feel confident with their service.
Gordon
I'll second/third the nominations for Joker ;)

Funny, I was just going to start a thread asking about them. Ah well, so there. I'm asking.
Has anyone (else) used them? Am I so far behind? $15 is normal now? (I keep thinking there's gotta be a catch. I also keep thinking, I wish I'd known that last month before registering my ring's url.)
With Dotster, is everything editable online? Can you hide stuff like your address/phone#?
gthorley 10-20-2000, 10:08 AM If you don't need redirection and want an openSRS registration. They let you do everything on a control panel even change ownership, then go to
http://www.easyhosting.com/
Cost is $15.00 Canadian or just under $10.00 U.S. This is owned by Look Communications. They are going to be major force in wireless ISP in Canada in the future. My guess is they will get taken over by a larger company like Rogers, Shaw or BCE eventually.
If you need redirection you can get it free from https://www.zoneedit.com/ up to 5 domains are free then they charge. I have a domain set up with them and it works quite smoothly. Whether they can make money and last is another question.
JimDonahew 10-20-2000, 10:09 AM I think 000domains is one of the best.
Very poor HTML design, but I just don't care about design. Good control pannel, you can modify nameservers anytime.
$13.50/year, and OpenSRS is good.

I guess for those want to save $3.50 U.S. 000domains is just an openSRS reseller for Tucows as is Easyhosting/Look Communications. The difference is that the latter is a major corporation listed on the VSE. Both use the same control panel. But telephone support is non-existant at 000domains whereas Easyhosting has a toll free line 1-800-696-8909

I'm kinda confused here. If Easyhosting is a reseller for Opensrs, how can they offer registrations @ under US$10 when Opensrs offers its resellers US$10/domain?
Billing structure of Easyhosting also confuses me, from their FAQ:
Is $15.00 the only fee we have to pay?
When you register your domain name there is an annual fee that is payable to the registration agent (easyhosting) of $15.00 plus applicable taxes. When this payment is made our accounting system runs a pre-authorization check on your credit card for $15.00. At a later date (approx. 24 hours) a charge of $16.05 is applied to your card. The pre-authorization amount is credited back to your card up to 72 hours later.
There is also a year option for $30.00 the pre-authorization amount remains the same.
HUH???... !!!
diyoha 10-20-2000, 12:31 PM Because they get the domains at 10/domain year does not mean they have to sell it for higher! This maybe a loss leader strategy where once you get a domain from them you might want to get other services etc

You pay $15.00 plus sales tax of 7% or $1.05 for total of $16.05 Canadian. You can claim the sales tax back but it will cost you more in stamps than its worth
They tell me at Easyhost that the word 2 is missing from the section re $30.00 At this price they say a lot of people are signing for 2 years.
There are no other charges whatsoever as long as you go to http://manage.opensrs.net to make changes yourself if someone is computer illiterate and want them to do it it costs $75.00
I got this info by calling 1-800-696-8909. Anyone else need further info to clarify anything should call them.
