Does anyone know what the typical grace period is before a domain officially expires and can be registered by someone else? I've got my eye on a domain that was only "registered" through October 15th and it hasn't yet been extended yet so I kind of doubt they're going to be.. but here it is a month afterwards and a whois of the domain still points to thier info. Any thoughts?

In theory they give the original owners a certain grace period to renew depending on the registering registrar; this could be 10 - 60 days. If the original owner of the domain in question lets it go, your looking at a window of 3 months to 3 years depending on the mood of the domain gods on when it will drop.

I've had .co.uk's that have gone 7 MONTHS over and still been retained but .coms are a little different.

One of my clients is a domain dealer and he has lists of all soon to expire domains that he hits the SECOND they become available.

There are servers running out there whose only job in life is to pick up these domains by sending spamming multiple applications one after another all day.

He's not alone in doing this, there are dozens of people doing the same - he said to me that if he could pick up one 3 letter domain a day it would earn him around $10,000 dollars a month.

The chances of any 'ordinary Joe' picking up a good domain name that's expiring are probably worse than winning the lottery

Depressing but completely true . . . .

And remember, if it's a good one and registered through Network Solutions, they may buy it themselves.

:( Well that stinks. It's nothing special, cbhomes.com ( cb=Council Bluffs, the town that I live in ) so I doubt it'll get snatched up by any of them bots you were talking about, but 3 mo. to 3 yrs.! Might have to think of something else...
