One of our clients would like to use windows on a dedicated server. We currently only deliver DS with a Unix operating system.

Are there any specific licenses needed for a windows dedicated server or would Windows server 2000 license do?

Thanks.

It all depends on sites, users etc... MS licencing can be complicated. Are you looking at getting a dedicated server in a DC? It would be best to check with the DC you get the licence from and see what type of W2k licence they give you.

We run our own DCs in two countries. But have zero experience with windows hosting.

You should use MS SPLA for selling multiple on a windows server. For that though you need to be a MS partner which costs 1k per year and requires 2 MS certified staff members. You can get around that to join but I doubt it will be worth it for one server.

If you customer is just using the server for their own websites they or you could just buy a retail version of the software. Windows 2003 server is much better than win2k server. Depending on what they want to do with the server win2k3 web edition would save you quite a bit of cash but has some small limitations.

Kind Regards
