View Full Version : Windows XP, FAT32, and RedHat Linux

I'm going to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP Pro on Friday (the 16th), and in the process, I'm going to retire a pair of semi-mirrored 15.3 gig hard drives and replace them with a pair of 60 gig drives. Best I recall, FAT32 partitions are limited to 32 gigs. Is this true, and if so, does it mean I will have to use NTFS for my main partition?

I was hoping I could stay with FAT32 because I also plan on installing RedHat Linux on another partition for testing purposes, and would like a nice way to share data between them without the need for a third data partition. But since I am obviously going to have to do this, how big would you advise me make my Linux partition (it will use the Linux FS) and a shared partition (FAT32) to make ends meet? I plan on installing Apache, OpenSSH, and several other apps for testing in Linux, and will likely do some nice-sized document transfers. As of now, here is what I am thinking:

NTFS: 54 gigs
Linux: 5 gigs
FAT32: 1 gig

Does anyone have any other paramaters to recommend? Thanks!
