I am using smartftp to upload files to my first website. My question is, where do these files exactly go? I know they go to the remote server, but are they supposed to go directly to the page and take shape? if not where can I find them and manage them? I uploaded the files into the public folder but when I go to my domain address they are not there...any poiners?

i do not use smartftp, but with regular ftp, you can issue a command to indicate which diretcory you are connected to. Also, some hosts want you to connect to a specific directory - like www - to load your files into to be accessed from the web. With my host I have to put the files in www and the initial page needs to be called index.whatever. Don't know if that helps.

Scuzzy you need to check out what directory they are going into. Sometimes hosts put you one level up from where the files need to go. Take a look at all the folders that you see when you log in. The folder that you may need to put your files could be named:
* Web
* www
* httpdocs
* website
etc...
You may have your files in the wrong directory. Also you need to make sure your domain is pointing to the right place, are you getting page not found errors or are you seeing the default start up page when you expect to see what you uploaded?

www
httpdocs
public_http
are all the same. www is just a link to either public_http or httpdocs
