Has anyone registered a domain from new.net (http://www.new.net)? Some of the extensions look pretty cool, but I'm kind of confused, though. Are these real TLDs, or what? Can any host set up an account using these extensions? I'm trying to locate the faq but now I can't find it. I remember reading that in order for the domain to show up, some hosts have to set up something to point to yourname.name and yourname.name.new.net, or something odd like that.

From what it says on their site, only users who are using ISP's that recognize these domain's (they are not standard internic/nominet domains) can access the website the domain is pointing to.

This makes it useless if you don't use one of their partner ISP's.

Sounds like a good idea, but I'd wait and see if it's accepted by all the isp's globally, otherwise no one would be able to access your website.

New.net was made with the main aim of over running ICANN, and their domains can only be accessed if you have a special plugin installed or if you are on one of their partner ISP's, buying a domain from them is INMO just waste of money.

A domain is zero if not everyone can access it, besides these are not real TLD's and no, you have to use their name servers (this was a while back when they had just launched dunno if they changed it).

yeah, I was one of the first ones to jump on the new.net bandwagon and bought a domain name (ms.tech) from them.

It was worth a shot, $25/year back then.

I haven't really done much with it .. who am I kidding, I haven't done anything with it. I thought it would be a good investment, perhaps ICANN could have bought them out or something.

But new.net seems to be growing, but it's still not worth it. What's the point of owning a domain name if only a certain percentage can access it.

And, yes, I think new.net has a list of web hosting companies that support their domains. Just look on their main page.

I share this opinion.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if ICANN adopts any of the new.net extensions, domains registered through new.net will most likely be worthless.

I own site.club! I haven't done anything with it though. :| Basically new.net domains only work for ISPs that have enabled it and home users that have downloaded the new.net plugin. What they've done is pretty cool and I was with them at first, however they've gone a bit overboard. Their plugin basically turns yourname.ext.new.net into yourname.ext. On the host side of things you have to point one to the other and I never did get the e-mail working for it.

Not a bad idea... Nothing else there so mind as well pop something small in. If I have time I might do that for mine later. If the page becomes active I'll remove the address up there just to make sure I don't break the rules. Honestly though, for the pains it can take to get the url working and the fact that not everyone can see the new.net domains, they're charging entirely too mcuh.

New.net isnt the only company pulling off this wierdo domain name scam. There's also:

youcann.org
namespace.org

Infact any kiddie with dns server on the net can pull off a scam like this.

Asher.

Agree, and there have been other free things like this (I think it was something like xtt?), and if the free thing didn't catch on, then I don't know why this would. I realize new.net is throwing money at ISPs but still...

New.net is adopting a more commercial and professional look towards these worthless domains.

Although 70million or whatever people can access these worthless tlds there's no point in advertising your domain name unless *everyone* can access em.

Thats why gTLDS from ICANN rock :)

heck even ccTlds like .ws, .to, .cc etc are globally accessible so whats the point in these domains?

It is also my opinion (last I checked) that they didn't go out of their way to clearly explain it to someone who may not fully understand that it isn't something that can be seen for everyone.

There certainly are hints... at top, "Enable your browser to see new.net domains" ( hmmm, that's odd) and a chart that shows their growth and under that, "73,452,576 Internet users worldwide have access to New.net domain names*" and the '*' is at the bottom in tiny 1 point type, "* New.net domain names are accessible by persons that use one of our partner ISPs to access the Internet or who activate their browsers. This number is limited now, but growing daily. For source information click here."

But overall, I'd say it looks close to any registrar and if you just go through the order process, besides the tiny type at the bottom and the odd hint to enable your broswer at the top, I can see that you might register these domains without really knowing what you are getting into. At $35/yr., I'd bury this info as well...
