Please tell me which hosting company is good for UBB, that means it won't kick me out if I get lot of traffic (like 8GB/month) and costs less than $30/month, is that too much to ask?

Also, does anybody know how to make a greetings card in your site, not using other web service like bravenet.com. What are requirements? Thank you for your input.

Well instead of using UBB you could use VB which is much better and cheaper and no host would kick you off :)
You can check out

http://www.ultraspeedusa.com
http://www.dynastyhost.com

For the Greeting cards site, you could check out
http://www.cgi-resources.com or
http://www.hotscripts.com

Both of them have a collection of perl and php scripts, which you could use on your site, and they are mostly free.

I would have to agree about using vBulletin rather than UBB. UBB is a notorious resource hog, which is why it is not feasible for many shared server hosting plans. This forum switched from it a few weeks back and you can find the discussion about the improvements resulting from the change.

As far as the card program, you might want to take a look at http://anyecard.com Although they do remote card sending, you can also download the software and use it on your own site. There are several new features that will be added to the program soon. I've worked with the authors on other programs and they do good work. They are very responsive to suggestions, work fast, and create stable programs

I would have to also agree with vBulletin over UBB. I've heard UBB now has a mySQL version (bringing it up to vBulletin's faster speed) but does not have as good "hacker-proof" security.

Hi Nam,

I run a fair sized UBB and also have vB staged. I don't mean to sound harsh, but given UBBs requirements it's just not realistic to think about a host for $30 per month.

I'm not clear on weather your UBB already generates 8 gigs per month in bandwidth consumption? Or is this a projection? If it already does, you belong on a dedicated server.

Here is an interesting storage stat which I hope helps you. My UBB currently consumes over 275 MB of storage. Importing this data into vB and then a MySql "dump" produces a data file of about 28 MB.

At one time my BB was hosted with HiWay/Verio on a virtual account at over $250.00 per month. UBB was consuming so many resources and ticks that Hiway "killed" the process and as I'm sure you know that means corrupted files and a Board that no longer functions properly. Thats when I moved to my own box :)

HTH and good luck in whatever you decide.

The others have already discussed vB vs. UBB, so on to the greetings card section.

You might like to have a look at the PHP and Perl sections at http://www.hotscripts.com and look at 'greeting cards' or similar sections - there's some very good free ones there.

Thank you everybody, you all are very helpful.

I still a few more questions, those sites that kunal suggested, are they 1-person-operate companies? I'm going to host with your-site.com, but I might change since those sites above offer dedicated IP and MySQL, PHP included. Btw, vB works with both, rite? But I don't know the difference between them (SQL and PHP)?

Steve_S, I'm asking for my friend, he's running an Asian UBB website that has close to 5,000 members.

Duster, the link did not work, but thanks anyway.

Thank you all again for helping out.

Nam,

The companies as suggested by Kunal are not one-person companies - indeed, many of them actually hang around this forum and help others out. They also have proven uptime, speed and tech support so you should have no problems with whoever you go with.

Your-site.com is also highly recommended, as they have one of the best tech support teams on the Internet.

vB works with PHP/MySQL, and as you may be aware this very forum runs vBulletin. MySQL is a free database, and more info can be found at http://www.mysql.com PHP is a server-side programming language (much like Perl, the language in which UBB is written) and speeds up automated tasks. You can find out more info at http://www.php.net

Hope this helps.

Nam, will you be kind enough to tell me the Asian board that has 5,000 members, I am interested to look at the board.

Thanks.

BTW, I seconded BC and Kunal on the suggested hosts. They have contributed a lot to this board helping the rest. Infact my soon to be hosting service will be with hostmatters.com. I choose them based on the comments and my personal experience communicating with them, Annette and Stephanie of hostmatters.com has been very helpful and professional.

fweikeong, I came here to ask question, not to advertise the website, but if you want, I will email you. His website already has 4927 memebers as of right now, take care.

My big thank to BC, best wishes.

Nam,

The link to AnyEcard does work. I just tried it again by clicking on it. MSIE has the annoying habit of sometimes returning an error message when clicking on a link. usually, clicking again will get to the site.
