Hey everyone, just had a question..
If an iMac and a PC are networked with the iMac only having a modem, is it possible for the PC to dial up to the net, using the iMac's modem while networked? If so, how would you do that? And is it difficult?

Thanks in advanced..

It can be done, but I'm not sure about the best way to do it. I use a piece of software called IPNetRouter running on a mac to share a cable modem. It can also be used to share a dialup connection with an entire network (1 other computer in your case). I'm not sure if you'd be able to control the modem (dialing and hanging up from the PC). There may be other solutions out there, but I'm not really a mac guy anymore (went over to the dark side a few years ago). Note that IPNetRouter would cost you $90, which is more than the cost of a modem for your PC.

Im not that MAC friendly. I personally dont like the MAC computers, PCs are much better.

But as far as I know, if you disconnect from the network, basically by pulling the network link, you should be able to dial up on that. Or, if you set up a server, and then plug in your modem to your hub, that should work as well.

Its all in the set up of the servers/workstations. I dont know how to do it with a mac, but I know how to do is with a pc.

hope this helps.

Thanks joe and jimp for replying..

Yeah I don't think I'd be able to buy that software, because it would be obviously cheaper to buy a modem for it and solve the problem all together. But.. I know that PC and Mac can be hooked up to Network, I just don't know if the PC will be able to dial up and hang up with the Mac's modem. Oh BTW, my ISP is AOL - I don't know if that would make a difference or not. But I know that AOL users can connect using a network, or "LAN".
I don't have a hub, or router - but in the future when I upgrade to DSL, I will be getting a router - gonna share that really nice fast connection with my bro :D

Peace,

- Shawn

Sharing an AOL connection is a pain. IPNetRouter doesn't support it. I don't really have any better ideas than buying a modem for the PC. You might want to try asking in the mac forum over at http://dealchat.com/
I don't like their forum software, but you'll probably find more mac geeks over there.
