...what is involved in hosting Plone?

Well plone is an extension for Zope (http://www.zope.org), so you need to get that first. Zope runs its own webserver, and I believe there is a way to integrate it into Apache.

Once you've got zope, you just need to get the files for plone. All you need to do is copy the files into the appropriate places in the Zope directory (there is a file in the archive telling you what files to put where).
