Aloha
well all I am needing any input or feedback on a Links style script ;) (directory scripts )
yes I am going to search hotscripts etc... but again any help to save some time ;) and bad trial and errors
I have used Links from http://gossamer-threads.com
but wanted something in PHP prefered or ASP
needed it if at all possible to do reviews of sites and rank them showing results etc...
would also like to have the ability to have Sponsors show up above the rest if needed also a bonus would be a Pay per click ;)

was curious what people have been using and any other info glitches etc... would be great
big Mahalos for help

(we may make a custom setup in future but need soemthing for next 6months to a year to get us through ;)

Honu,

The only program that I know of (PHP) that even comes close to GT-Links is In-Link (http://www.in-link.net). It has all the features that you mentioned except for the sponsored site.

OTOH, it has an editors pick (which you can force to the top) so if you don't need an editors pick, you could just use that feature as your sponsored site.

The software is quite flexable. All the display is template based, so it's very easy to customize. The also have a feature called "mods". "mods" let you create your own template tags so if you need something that they don't supply, you can write it yourself. I'm using it for things like a "last 5 links added" on the index page.

If you want more details and a look at the beta of a site I'm developing, contact me via PM, email or instant messanger..

A friend of mine has something like this in PHP. From what I can see, it's very good.

Just seconding Frank's recommendation, and I also have a demo you can look at if you'd like. Contact me off board if so...

I heard GT released a new php version, I think it is php+mysql. Check the boards at GT.

If I read the stuff correctly, you have to upgrade to GT-Links SQL first. That's 400+ US Dollars. Then it's just a PHP "front end" (whatever that means). I was looking for a pure PHP replacement.

I really want to get away from Perl.

Aloha

I used GT links before but wanted people to be able to give there thoughts as well as rate it
will have to check out GT forums see what mods there are I did some pretty good looking there but didnt see much ;)
well Mahao again to all
looks like Inlinks might be teh way to go for now till custom solution anybody else still feel free ;)
will let ya all know when I get it going ;)

Indexu was the other one I was looking at, but decided to pass on it. Really, phpnuke is close, so close that it is hard to justify spending money on any link script almost, but...

Honu
11-12-2001, 04:28 AM
Aloha yeah I am going to use phpnuke at somepoint on a project
man no time in life ;)
I have heard it is very cpu intensive though and not written very well ???
so not sure what to believe ???

I found a pay per click module for the GT Links but they want over a $1000 bucks
ahhhh no not going to happen for that much $$$$$

will keep looking
more than likely I will just get InLink then when I can make a custom one (like I will ever have time) that will do more of waht I want ;)

had to find my link ;)
also have played with this I like it better than nuke so far ;)

Aloha
well there site says a server lic but you can only use it on one domain
I sent an email about this but I needed it to run on 40 sites ;(
not going to afford that ;)
hehehehe
so might just use GT links for most all of them so sad ;(
Chad is sad see Chad he is not mad just sad ;)

dang to much eggnog my brain not working correct ;)

Are you referring to In-Links?

Honu
11-12-2001, 05:44 AM
Aloha
yeah inlinks says server lic but in the forum doing a search he said per URL
so
might modify links I did a sweet links some time ago
I can mod it up to do comments and there are a few doing the pay per click thing so looks like I will go with Links
I can keep there url on the bottom on most of my free sites and get a lic for the one main site.

I will just have to port over the info later if I do a custom solution ??

Just e-mail the folks at In-Link to get the license question answered. I don't know all the details, but I was told I could run as many copies as I needed under a single domain with a single license.

If your 40 sites are 40 different domains, then I would expect to pay for the software 40 times.

Aloha
yeah it is 40 dif urls ;)
so
I am use to dealing with if they say a server lic it means a server lic not a URL ??
so will use the links with there info intact on the non comercial sites and pay for the one I need if I want it off

Honu,

Aloha! I would suggest just sending an e-mail to them to get this answered.

I had the same question. I needed to run 3 different copies on In-Link (3 databases, 3 url's) on the same domain. They told me that I only needed one license for that.

OTOH, don't take my word. Just takes an e-mail to confirm.

Aloha

thanks ;)
yeah I emailed over the weekend so figure should get an answer today or tomrow
someone else asked the question in the forum seems your case yeah no prob but he was specific about per Main url or IP
I do not think he has a grasp of the dif of saying
server lic or IP lic or URL lic
which is no biggy and is not saying anything about him or his Co just a observation ;)

ahhhh but after no sleep last night links looks like it will work for me fairly well

You might want to check out PHPLinks (http://phplinks.org)

See a demo here (http://phplinks.org/phplinks/in.php?ID=4)

BTW, PHPLinks is free ;)

No, NOoOo, do not choose Indexu.
The support is almost non-existence and the developer does not even test new releases! It's been a while (20+ days) since upgrade script wasn't working for some people and the developer hasn't released a fix for it.

The test I put up of phplinks didn't work, probably due to something I did or didn't do but in-link worked out of the box, no problems. I guess it si like anything else, if it is important, then you might consider spending money, if not all that important, then a freebie would probably do the trick.

Aloha
thanks Chicken ;)
yeah I will have to try it out looks nice but if a pain not worth it
I have a main site I will spend money on it but other ones for free
might still try links though have used it it also has a large support group.
it has its limits but should be OK for my needs ;)

PHPLinks is good. I used it myself for a while.. Ran well. However if you want a pay-per-click type thing take a look at http://www.smartcgis.com/ and check out smart search... It's essentially a GoTo clone that will fill itself on the DMOZ directory. You can just highlight or toplist paying clients. Simple to install and ran like a dream while I had it installed. (never developed the site though - still thinking about it).

and yeah.. that is a testimonial from me there on their site
