first, I suppose you know how complicate it might be to build a 1U server. For single CPU motherboards, people like to use for a entry/medium level server are based on i815 Chipset with build in Video and NIC ... Microstar MS-6315 (815EM-Pro) is a good one ... You may also use Intel's own motherboard, such as D81EAL, D815EEA2L, etc). Other motherboard that I have used is Asus CUSI-FX (based on SiS 630 chipset, not i815 chipset). I prefer the Asus one since I can put as much as 1GB of memory on it wherease with Intel, I can only put 512MB max ...
Good luck,
cheers,

I know it may be a little complicated at first, I can admit that I never built a single U1, however it's all space wise.
I build over 100 PCs in past 5 years and I have a lot of experience in building pcs, the thing that bothers me is memory size, I mean I want to use crucial and I'm not sure it's going to fit, I'll guess I'll take some crucial out of my pc and measure it.
Anyone else using crucial memory in U1?
Thx,

Tyan is who I can recommend. I have them in all my servers and havnt had a problem yet. The 2510 or the 2518(newest) work great. I have them with the scsi onboard and havent had any problems. They have angled memory slots so you shouldnt have any problems.

Can anyone recommend a motherboard that has Video/Lan oboard and had IDE Raid on board? I decided to go with 2U case and I shouldn't have any problem at all.

If you want a cheaper board, try the Tyan s2505 (or s2505t if you want tualitin). Dual p3 (up to 1ghz), onboard IDE raid, onboard video, onboard dual LAN, up to 1.5 GB of pc133 non-ecc ram. All of this for a little over $200. (Just look around on pricewatch...)

One thing that i have learned from jasen is to make sure to get a SERVER MOTHERBOARD
Jasen is a systems engineer with US.net network and he said the following last night after my kernel crashed on my linux 7.1 server and tries to help anytime his not busy with various problems I have run into
Can you check if there is a motherboard model # and if it supports bios through the serial interface? That's what you want so you can connect to the serial from some sort of external device, modem, or terminal server and watch the machine boot up, change the bios. Basically administer it remotely.
I've only seen motherboards made by intel have it. But it's a NECESSITY for servers. Sun hardware all support it. You need a server motherboard. That's a key difference.
No matter where I am I can get into our mail server as though I'm sitting at the monitor with a keyboard. It's perfect. It's saved my ass lots of times. I personally don't like to rely on ANYONE. =)

That Tyan Board s2505 looks mad cool, I'm thinking of getting it, what do you guys think? I don't think I can connect some sort of a device to the serial to do what you said you can do. But I wondre how the device is called and how much it cost
