View Full Version : My camera in a datacenter
KevlerS 11-10-2001, 05:14 PM Anyone have any idea whether it's allowed to connect a web cam to a server in a datacenter? I have a bunch of space above my server, so I don't see why I couldn't have a camera there -- it's my space and I'm paying for it. Give me your thoughts. If so, I'm planning on hooking up a camera to my server at nac.
The Prohacker 11-10-2001, 05:18 PM You would have to contact the datacenter owner to get a answer, I very much doubt anyone here can help ya with that... I don't see why they wouldn't want it up their, but they might have privacy concerns....

Yea ... but then how do you limit/guarantee your camera to be looking at only your own servers, not others, or even looking at NAC's rack where your server is put? Besides, if you put if above your servers in the rack, how would you be able to see your servers (without some sort of extension, which may be bad) or perharps you just want to see the top of your server? ;)
cheers,
AlaskanWolf 11-10-2001, 08:29 PM Why would you want a camera there anyways? all it would be doing is looking at your servers lights blinking...whats the fun in that..
JustinK 11-10-2001, 08:36 PM ::drools:: blinking servers lights... lol j/k. Maybe he wants to make sure someone isn't messing with his servers without his permission?

LOL. Good point though: it might be nice to be able to "check" whether your server is still secure. That would certainly be great for peace of mind.
You know... whenever you get a feeling someone might have tampered with your server, just fire up the webcam... ;)
AlaskanWolf 11-10-2001, 09:28 PM lol, maybe that can be a new sales tactic for ded/colo places
"Check to see if your cabinet is secure with our state of the art webcam! If theres a total black picture on your screen, that means your cabniet is closed."
akashik 11-10-2001, 11:02 PM hehe, well if the last image sent out from the cam before it stopped working and your server went offline was a crazed staff member with a big axe in their hand you might have some issues to bring up with the NOC. :D

Acctually, There is a datacenter that offers a web cam on the inside of a cabinet door. if you go to www.nyi.net and look in their colocation section, and select quote. You can find that in their extras section, SECURITY VIEWCAM is listed as one of the options. I think its the same thing as Editor was saying.
http://www.nyi.net/ccolocam.html
Its pretty cool, I would get it if I got colo with nyi.net
Jim
CommuniTech.net has some live cameras of their datacenter, 24/7 week. Thy are pretty cool, anyways the link is,
http://www.communitech.net/corporate/tour/cameras/ ;)
JustinK 11-11-2001, 06:54 AM omg it's Hal 2k! "What are you doing techy?"
bitserve 11-11-2001, 08:26 AM KevlerS, I think it's a great idea. It would be neat to be able to see your servers any time you wanted. It would be rather boring, but I can imagine some level of comfort gained.
Of course, I'd rather have a camera on the 24/7 tech guys so that I could see if they really were busy, or just playing halflife. Maybe even sleeping? When my simple request for another IP address goes without response for almost 24 hours, it would be nice to just see someone working. That way I'd know that they're going to get to me some day.
Otherwise, I just imagine that no one's home and all the lights are turned off. I imagine a dark room dimly lit by a screen saver.
:uhh:
NetXL 11-11-2001, 08:38 AM Nice to see the admins hard at work ;)
http://www.communitech.net/corporate/tour/cameras/camera.ctx?10th1
They were spinning on their chairs a minute ago, I want that job!
Lawrence 11-11-2001, 08:58 AM I can just imagine the support calls :D
"My server seems to be running very hot, it says 230 degrees"
.
.
.
"Oh, and please clean the soot off my camera and turn it 5 degrees left."

If i was them i would remove the "Support Services" camera, because i just checked and the whole room is empty. Bad for a company offering "our representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help with any aspect of your web hosting experience". :D
Yeah, also noticed how they had no one in their support services room, and I was looking at it at 10:00 am on a sunday. I did notice, however, that they had 2 people in their NOC playing Red Alert!!!!
Seems like a slow day for them!
Jim
mkaufman 11-11-2001, 01:51 PM Wow, nobody is in that place..
I looked through all the cameras and only found one guy in the System Engineering room playing with a computer - then he left.. :)
Kylecool 11-11-2001, 02:10 PM It's a cool camera though. There is nobody at the receptionist desk, nobody at support or sales... Not too good. I see a whole rack of cobalt's runnign fine. But I hate those. LMAOPMP!!!!
There are like 3 cars in their parking lot. HMM. Its 10:05 in California, so its like 1:00 for them. HMM. I'm not goign there, but I think their cameras are cool!
-Kyle
klisis 11-11-2001, 02:16 PM It was cool but I was sad to see no one was in any of the room with camera. (I really didn't see anyone at all.) Heh.

lol :flamethr:
klisis 11-11-2001, 03:30 PM Really, I am not joking. There is NO ONE there! I looked at one an half hour ago and I looked at the rooms now. NO ONE is there! :bawling:
JustinK 11-11-2001, 03:49 PM haha... we're going to be watching over the communitech people now. When life goes from semi-normal to completely sad. Their waiting area is neat.. guess they like to leave people in the dark. Oh oh! Someone is in the support room! ok. I'm scaring myself now. ::goes off to do something else::
Alareach 11-11-2001, 04:26 PM It is dark now in the reception and waiting area, I assume because it is Sunday and that area wouldn't normally be open in most businesses.
;)
AH
klisis 11-11-2001, 04:34 PM Cool. I am seeing a few people now.
One at Support dp
One at system engieering.
EDIT : But.. HEY, the guy in support services room is eating something on his desk.
I wonder....hmm....Im gonna call them up and see if I get anyone.
Sales: Nope, says leave a message and you will be called back
Support: Routed to a cell phone and the guy said that only montoring people are there.
LOL
Jim
LOL, i'm going to check these tom. and see if anyone even comes on a Business day, (Mon)
Kylecool 11-11-2001, 06:52 PM I just saw 2 people on a computer on one of their cams. I also finally saw 1 support person on the headset phone. hehehe. I like the whole camera Big Brother thing though. LOL! Don't know if I would work there though with peeping tom's all the time. :)
-Kyle
ShellBounder 11-11-2001, 08:07 PM I see 2 people playing foosball in the lounge...
gabeosx 11-11-2001, 08:27 PM ROTFLMFAO my friend just watched a car get stolen from the parking lot there.
genaldi 11-11-2001, 08:32 PM That's classic. I haven't seen anyone in the NOC anytime I've checked in to see what's going on at that place....
last time I looked, there was a guy in the billing department.
Jim
genaldi 11-11-2001, 08:53 PM Yah, saw a few different people in different departments. But nobody in what appears to be the least important area of that company, the NOC.... Go figure..
mkaufman 11-11-2001, 10:26 PM I could laugh forever watching these people..
mkaufman 11-11-2001, 10:31 PM Take cover..!!
Kylecool 11-12-2001, 01:30 AM ROTFLMAOPMP
That says it all!!!

One Web 11-12-2001, 01:56 AM Isn’t that Building Roof cam a volition of people's privacy. I went to see it just now and its not pointing to the generators anymore it was pointing as another building and the light of one of the building's room was on and the can just zoomed right into the window and i could almost see what was going on in there. Do people even know that cam is there? (as in the people that live around there)
One Web 11-12-2001, 04:35 AM look at them sleeping in the NOC...
the-admiral 11-12-2001, 07:26 PM We do not allow cameras in our DataCenters for security reasons. All of our DataCenters are monitored 24x7 by our internal CCTV network. If you are concerned about the security of your machine, maybe you should consider moving upstairs to our Enterprise Colocation suite. This way only you would have the key to your locked cabinet.

well said matt@NAC, i was waiting for someone to say something regarding security.
w/ these live cams , you can zoom in each employees machine and know a little of what they are doing even log their keyboard strokes and maybe these can be used to aide attackers in attacking their network sooner or later.
i hope we have more network admins/engineers like matt@NAC.
KevlerS 11-12-2001, 10:37 PM I definitely agree with you about the camera in a datacenter. It would pose security problems (also don't think anyone would want their machines and equipment shown on a web cam). Plus, just having a still web cam isn't that interesting. A photo would easily do the job. How many of you stare at the communitech servers? It's much more fascinating following the people around, although this is a bit wicked in itself.
KevlerS 11-12-2001, 10:44 PM Check out these pics. This guy really thinks the cameras are groovy. He just can't get enough of 'em. It must make him really nervous knowing all those people can look at him. I would assume the cams help the employees stay on track.
klisis 11-13-2001, 09:27 AM Well, it may be insecure but I like what they are doing (as a cusomer , not as a host :) ). I feel like I can trust them. (I said I *feel like. And of course, it is my opinion as a customer.)
P.S. I had been with Communitech net long ago, not anymore though.
I find it hard to believe that you could read anything they are typing. The only text I've been able to read was CNN when they were at CNN.com yesterday morning. It was also on the giant plasma screen.
I've been with CT for over 3 years and wouldn't ever consider leaving.
They actually had a pretty good idea becoming the first web host to offer live cameras. Look at all the hits they're receiving from people just going to see their live cams.
Jeff
klisis 11-13-2001, 04:48 PM Yeah, I like what they are doing. At least I can see that they do have staff and the equipments. I always wondered if a host lies about their equipments.

El Nino 11-14-2001, 02:56 PM I was looking at the employee lounge and one guy had a camera on a tripod and was taking picture of another guy playing pool.
JustinK 11-14-2001, 04:30 PM ok, you people are having a bit too much fun watching them! Seriously, there gets to a point where you can be labeled a stalker... :D
KevlerS 11-14-2001, 04:53 PM On Communitech.net's site they say they have 16 out of the total 32 cameras online. I'm really starting to wonder where the other 16 cameras could possibly be.......?
"We have provided views on all floors and all of our departments including some marvelous skyline views of downtown Kansas City as well." Seems like they covered everything if they can afford to show pics of the skyline.
Any guesses?
One Web 11-14-2001, 04:58 PM restrooms :D
They must have more then 1 cam in the datacenter. And they have other places like stairs and elevators. My question is how can you have good security if you only have 32 cams on a 11 floor building?
KevlerS 11-14-2001, 05:08 PM LOL! Let's hope they don't have any in the restrooms.
I would assume they only lease 4 or 5 floors in the building because they mention that they "have provided cams on all floors to view" (they list the floors on the navigation menu). I guess they have multiple views in the places you indicated.
NyteOwl 11-14-2001, 05:17 PM I don't know about there but the only surveillance cameras that are legal here in restrooms, clothes changing rooms and locker rooms are those aimed at the door(s) to the room to view people entering/leaving.
ShellBounder 11-14-2001, 05:18 PM They only lease 4 or 5 floors of the MainMark building. I really enjoy watching the tech support people play foosball. :) I wonder, though, if they are going to put the other 16 camera on the Web? That'd be really cool if they did.
As with security, the cams don't zoom in ehough to really tell what anyone is typing, or what it's being used for. I'm not really concerned about that.
Dylan 11-14-2001, 09:43 PM Last night there were 3 cars in the parking lot but I could only see 1 person in the building. The NetOps section.
The chap working behind the computer was very very frustrated that I almost fell out of my chair. He was wanting to pull his hair out, throwing his hands in the air and screaming at the monitor, flopping all over the desk and scratching his balls.
EDIT: Oh and with regards to restrooms, down here, one of the shopping centres in my town has little cams in each toilet cubicle. The whole cubicle is covered, so yes you can see the person on the toilet. Each one also has a speaker and microphone.
My one friend almost crapped himself after he had finished on the toilet. Security was fooling around by making noises and comments based on his facial expressions.
Kylecool 11-14-2001, 10:48 PM Where do YOU live? Where I live, Cameras aren't allowed in RESTROOMS PERIOD, it's invasion of privacy. That is kinda gross if you ask me. At a door like in Los Vegas they are pointed at doors so they can see who goes in and out, and you might've seen that on TV about the Primadonna, but I'm 6 hours away from Vegas. I'm in CA in the USA! :)
-Kyle
Dylan 11-14-2001, 11:07 PM I'm in Gonubie, South Africa. The East London and Beacon Bay area.
Don't worry, it's an invasion of privacy in the other areas of South Africa too, just not where I stay.
rr_rocket 11-29-2001, 05:45 PM I work for Communitech, and I thought I should answer some of your questions. We do have 24/7 support. At night, there is noone in tech support because the one person who does virtual-hosting tech support is in the NOC. They also cover sales calls at night.
We do not have anyone in the billing department overnight (yet.) Sometimes there is someone in billing on the weekends doing paperwork, etc. There is another person working at night that covers dedicated support and network operations. Normally he is in the NOC, but sometimes he is building servers on the 11th floor, or rebooting. There is also an armed security guard here at all times.
Some of the things you don't see - hallways, security console, UPS room in the basement, some of the cameras in the facilities on the 10th and 11th floors, and the developement dept on 2.
bobcares 11-29-2001, 06:42 PM If you do not trust your datacenter ... i'd suggest you keep your servers somewhere else. No point thinking on how safe my cabinet is. Even if someone tamper you can just watch the damage.... :(
I would suggest a better investment would be some beer for the guys in the datacenter... they'd take good care of your servers and trust them on it....
Have a great day :)
Regards
amar
dbzgod 11-29-2001, 07:06 PM I just looked at CommuniTech and some guy just lost a game of fuize ball. No people in the support services.
mindboggle 11-29-2001, 07:48 PM Is it me or is the reception area on the 11th floor? The other day I saw the receptionist standing in systems engineering and she just left so I switched to the reception area camera and saw her walking in... reception area on the 11th floor??
TotalHst 11-29-2001, 10:28 PM Ummm, just to let you guys know.. The only reason to be in the NOC it self, is to install new equipment and for major issues. Everything else is done with the latest technology in remote access equipment, allowing them to fix issues from their desks in the support area. This keeps the NOC less accessed and more secure. Just thought i would let you guys know.
Tetraboy 11-29-2001, 10:49 PM Actually customer equipment is installed in the DATACENTER, the noc is where they MONITOR servers and they're network. Not where they're servers are actually AT. Too many people get this confused.
ShaunM 11-30-2001, 06:59 AM Lol, has anybody actually seen any servers yet? All i see is a bunch of wire, patch panels and a bunch of 2 post racks.
Edited.... N/m i take that back i missed the 11th floor datacenter 1 or was just at the wrong section or somthing.
Aaron@CT 11-30-2001, 08:06 PM Let me assure you guys, Just because you dont see anyone in the NOC it does not mean there is noone monitoring the network or servers. What you cant see on camera is Administrative offices etc. CT is still a relitively small company and a lot of the Upper management is still very hands on. During weekdays almost all network monitoring is done from offices outside the NOC. Also during slow hours we have employees that handle multiple departments.....As for servers I can vouch for the fact that I have personally put up hundreds of Dedicated servers since I have started for the company.
Aaron
gnorthey00 11-30-2001, 08:47 PM I suppose if you install a high resolution camera and can get line of site with one of the terminals at your NOC, you could watch admins log in and do maintenance and make sure they're not doing anything 'suspicious'
Dave@CT 12-01-2001, 01:11 PM Communitech.net
I am pleased to see that you all enjoy watching the camera's and it surprises me that someone has mentioned cars being stolen when they were not, and games being played when I can't seem to find any games on any of the NOC Computers. We do have a support person here on a 24/7 basis. However, you may not see them because they are on break or on lunch or because the support camera does not cover all support desks. I am someone who can vouch for the midnight to 9am shift CST tuesday - thursday and 9am to 6pm shift CST sat & Sun . . . as for the remark made about games being played on a sunday morning it did not happen. I personally would like to see some proof of these accusations . . . .
But I agree with JustinK in:
"ok, you people are having a bit too much fun watching them! Seriously, there gets to a point where you can be labeled a stalker... "
What kind of person really has enough time to sit around and watch CommuniTech employees work all day? Specifically mkaufman and KelverS in reguards to the pictures posted.. if you've got enough time to be sitting around watching them, god only knows what you guys look like.
Where are your mug shots at?
Could I find a picture of you both at www.uglypeople.com?

P.S.-That person only has one post. They also posted a short time after communitech. It's probably ok, but Mods, maybe check both of their IP's to see if it's communitech saying that. LOL
Dave@CT 12-01-2001, 01:32 PM whats the deal now? ignore ct employees? we have sumthn funny and witty to say too you know :stickout
Kyle - I do work for CommuniTech and am not pictured in either of the pictures mentioned.. I could care less if I'm on camera, but come on.. that's pathetic.
I have 2 posts now.. :)
Kylecool 12-01-2001, 01:35 PM I thought you worked for them. Sounded Fishy. They are cool cameras though. :) When I'm bored and have nothing to do, I just stare are the people , lol. I watched someone pick his nose once, LOL. Forgot to get a screenshot though. I will next time. However, I only do this when I'm BORED. LOL!
-Kyle
Being bored and just checking out the cameras is one thing.. but sitting there and looking for people to do weird stuff so you can get a screenshot of it??
It's just my opinion, but that's horrible. They could be out doing something useful like flipping burgers at McDonalds..
Dave@CT 12-01-2001, 01:43 PM so tell me 'kylecool' stalk people much?
Kylecool 12-01-2001, 01:46 PM NO, I just think that it's kinds funny watching people at work sometimes. I am NOT a stalker, and I think that's very unprofessional to say someone is, when they aren't.
-Kyle
P.S.-I will NEVER FLIP burgers at Mc Donalds! NEVER! :)
Dave@CT 12-01-2001, 01:48 PM hey i didnt accuse i just asked thats all dude no need to get werked up. . .
i said the same thing bout mcdonald's dude and landed a job a tv station . . . .
Kylecool 12-01-2001, 02:13 PM That's Nice, and by you saying rude things to customers, you will loose business, and I hope you do! LOL, Just Kidding! I'm not getting all worked up, I just think it's rude for a respected company to say things about our lives.

I just think it's rude for a respected company to say things about our lives.
The company never said anything about anyones lives. This is a forum where it's every man *edit* and woman.. no need for further offending people *edit* for himself or herself. Everyeone's comments belong to themselves.
Dave@CT 12-01-2001, 05:25 PM Kyle,
look dude i wasnt meaning for anythign of what I said to be taken as from the company. However I feel that what was said in this forum about the company that i love working for and respect highly as both from a clients view as well as an employee view that you as the viewer(s) caught only part of the picture.
I am glad that they let people see what we do here. Regardless if you catch us relaxing a little bit everyonce in while. . . .
and dude dont take waht i said serious i was joking.
peace
Kylecool 12-01-2001, 05:31 PM I know you were joking Dave! :)

mkaufman 12-01-2001, 05:44 PM Actually, I haven't looked at those communitech cameras in weeks, just posted those pictures for fun and it all happened within a few minutes so I wasn't hiding in front of my computer looking for stuff like that to happen.
All in good fun :)

(The staff should show us some more action when on camera...all they do is sit `n` stare, boring).
Tetraboy 12-01-2001, 08:15 PM So are any of you from ct, the ones we're watching now... This is like the Truman show, fun to watch. :-)
EDIT: As far as I can tell they only lease a few floors/suites in a larger building. I may be wrong but thats what I've heard.
How come the building is 11 stories high...what the heck does a hosting compnay need that many floors for?
They don't own the entire building.....they just lease like 4 floors in it.

What do expect them to do? It's a hosting company.
