Hi ya,

I just ordered an SSL certificate from THAWTE and they require me to send some kinda confirmation that I own the domain - but I have no certificates to say I own it.

Anything else I can use to prove it?

Also, when I put down the domain, I used secure.domain.com as the url - I think I ballsed it up - am I charged yet - or is it finalised when they have all the documentation back?

Normally you shouldn't have to send anything to prove you own the domain; they will check the WHOIS information and confirm that it matches the company info you submitted. So, unless they've asked you in email to send confirmation, you don't have to.

If they have asked, it means either they couldn't get WHOIS information -- perhaps because the domain is registered in some obscure TLD -- you'll need to send them a url from the registrar from which you got the domain.

If the problem is that the domain is not registered in your name, you'll need a letter from the person or company in whose name it is registered saying that you can use the domain for business purposes.

The whole point of a secure certificate, of course, is to make sure that all of this stuff is legit. There really are no short cuts or alternatives if it is not.

Thawte's reps are very helpful, and you should have received a name and contact information in email from them, along with a link to your status page which has helpful information for getting through these steps. Your best bet if you have a complicated situation is to call your rep.

hi ya

Thanks - I will give them a call :)
I registered the account with www.ukreg.com - as far as I know, I am the Admin/Technical/Owner contact for it.

Thanks anyway :)

If your WHOIS info is the same as the info you sent them, then the WHOIS can be the confirmation.

Thanks Palm - will fax them the WHOIS details - I have also emailed them too :)

That was all I had to do for mine... Actually it wasn't even faxed, just e-mailed as a text file pulled right out of Sam Spade. i think as long as your addresses and details match up it's not much of a deal. They seemed more interested in my phone number being accurate (as the one in the whois record is different from the one I use now)

You might want to life life easier for yourself by signing up with their hosting partner program at the same time, to cut down some duplication.
