Although all of the suspects are from North Carolina, Cantrell said, "they went through a server in Virginia, and as long as they go through Virginia then we can prosecute them under our Virginia statutes."

wow, possible 20 years behind bars. Is it me or does that seem alittle harsh? I think 5 years with a $250,000 fine should be for the first offense. I mean i'm all for anti-spam laws, but to me thats very harsh.

to me thats very harsh.

Until there's a conviction it's impossible to say what the eventual sentence will end up being, but no doubt as with most laws very few of the people convicted would be sentenced to the maximum allowable penalty. Also they're only pursuing cases against large-scale professional spammers, so we're not talking about a small business owner who mailed an offer to a couple thousand email addresses -- and the law only applies to spam sent fraudulently, by hiding who it's really from.

Bravo. I hope these actions by the state of Virginia have a ripple effect on the spammers.

Give them the chair... :)

Joking aside, I think they need to send a message and give them 20 years. Obviously the girl never learned, even AFTER her brother was arrested for the same damn thing many months ago.

What makes very little sense though is how they could get 20 years, yet if you kill someone, you can get off in 6 months.
