Can anyone recommend downloadable software that will test and report the quality of a server's ping time, dns lookup time, connect time, and file download time?

Are you talking something that is installed on the server, or on a local workstation? And do you want something for Linux or Windows?

I need software installed for a Windows workstation (similar to NetMechanic.com) but I need the ability to use my own software to test a server instead of paying a monthly fee. I have found tools that test uptime but none seem to test ping time, dns lookup time, connect time, and file download time.

I wrote an article about this for Webhostdir, you can read it here:

http://www.webhostdir.com/news/articles/showarticle.asp?id=192

But it sounds like you might like:

Servers Alive: http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/
YourSiteUp: http://www.killersoftware.com/ysu.htm

That being said, unless your workstation is in a multi-homed environment you are probably not going to get accurate information from these tools. You will be monitoring from a single location, over a single backbone. Any problems you notice coupld be caused baecause of a number of things completely unrealted to server or host performance.

I'm familiar with these uptime monitoring tools. However, none mentioned monitor and provide reports for ping time, dns lookup time, connect time, and file download time. They only report when a server is unreachable and send an alert. Thanks anyway.

Thes products will handle most of your needs, but you are right, they will not provide reports. If you are looking for something that will provide trend analysis, etc, try:

Empirix: http://www.empirix.com/

or

Mecury Interactive has a suite of products: http://www.mercuryinteractive.com/

If you prefer the open source route, you can try:

Cricket: http://cricket.sourceforge.net/

or
