Hi there

We are going to host 500 customers each server. Unfortunately I haven't any information about the bandwidth usage at rush hour yet. We don't support big download sites. There are just a few of them. We do host more websites (in average I guess those have 30-50 visits per day/each customer). What do you think we'll need for a bandwidth each server? 512K/1Mbit?

What are your experience with this?

Thanks a lot

Claudius

About 1.5 mbit for every 300 customers seems about right. Of course this all depends on the type of customers you target also.

1Mbps is fine for 500sites x 30hits in 24 hours. But it depends on the data transfer :)

Hi there

Thanks for your suggestions. Now we calculated it through. We use about 100 GB per month on each server. There are many results (in depends on the rush hour times). During the whole day and night are 512 ok. At rush hour we'll need probably about 1mbit each server. The thing is I can't say is how much traffic we do have at rush hour. I really don't know how to calculate that. I mean we guess we do have rush hour from 5 pm to 9 pm ( 4hours ). But how much % is this of the whole day (24 hours)? Any experience how much % are used at rush hour?

Thanks
Claudius

You've already got these servers running, right ?
If so, you might wana take a look at MRTG (http://www.mrtg.org/) which will give you some cool graphs about your bandwidth usage. You can see how much bandwidth is used every five minutes.

Also consider mod_thottle which not only shows you bandwidth usage, but also allows to limit it on a per user basis.

I have a relative question as I am seriously thinking of creating a web host service as a thesis project in a e-commerce course.

When we refer to bandwidth, I have the idea that it is the maximum data the line can handle in one specific instant second. Have I got it right? So, we can only have a theoretical approach to what the monthly transfer would be. And again the idea I have is that we can say that maximum transfer for that line is that data and that assumes that server uses all avaiolable bandwidth in every single second.

So, if I got both right, could I have some ideas of how much real traffic, under normal conditions, a line of 512,1024,...etc mbits
could handle per day or per month.

By the way, when a host says that has a connection of 155Mbits, should I usually expect it to be a leased line?

Thanks for any info
