So ... is it $40 per year? per month? How much data trasnfer do you expect getting? (I assume it's still 4GB/mo?) cheers, hessan 11-09-2001, 08:18 PM sorry ...yearly choon 11-09-2001, 08:30 PM Originally posted by hessan sorry ...yearly Err... are you asking for 4GB of data transfer per month for USD$40 per year? If so, you are asking for less than USD$1 for a GB transfer which is impossible for a host to provide you their hosting service and still profit from it :( Choon hessan 11-11-2001, 03:57 PM ?? choon 11-11-2001, 04:20 PM Originally posted by hessan ?? Hi hessan, I am not very sure which area you are confused... FYI, normally hosts bandwidth cost is about USD$1 to USD$3.50 per giga monthly. Now, think of you are a host... would you offer someone less than a dollar for a giga data transfer per month or offer your customers with your cost price on data transfer? What about support and web space? Profit? Hope this helps ;) Regards, Choon driverdave 11-12-2001, 01:10 AM I have a raq with RackShack, and I get 300GB, with the server, for ~ $110/month. So in theory, I could pack my raq with $40 yearly accounts like this and be profitable. I guess my bandwidth is about $0.37/GB, less considering hardware costs. Not that I would want to do that, just pointing out a fact. comphost 11-12-2001, 01:53 AM Heh, I doubt it works like that... I bet you might get 1mbps thruput, and well you see, you would have to thruput your 1mbps perfectly 24/7 to transfer your 300 gigs a month, and well networks dont work that way.. they spike up and down, and typically overnite is 20% transfer compared to during the day and the minute your 1mbps is filled during the day, your clients will be complaining because its so slow..... But anyhow, Please let me tell you something about hosting services as a business....... You see not only do hosting companies have to pay for bandwidth at around 1-5 bucks a gig themselves depending on the quality of the pipe or how the data center works. Hosting companies also have to manage additional bandwidth, servers, hardware, employees, administration, support, billing, ADVERTISING, Insurance, legal counsel, taxes, accountants, rent and other overhead etc etc.. You can pack your server all you want with idle clients and that would be great however, you dont have advertising.. then you do not exist... Ever try buying an ad lately? most do nothing, and you would faint at the costs. Most forget the BIG PICTURE. |
