I'm trying to install Windows XP Home Edition on an older machine, that I already had it on, but I want to reformat it with the same thing.

So here's the problem...

The DOS and GUI based installation works fine.. until it reboots. I can see the XP boot screen, then it just goes black. With speakers connected I can hear sound from the "Out of Box Experience", but I can't see it.

Any ideas?

the problem could be that when you first boot xp that it runs a test to configure your screen resolution based on how well you can see it. At that point the problem could be that your monitor / video card can't run the screen resolution that it is testing for.

I recommend you buy a new video card, and or new computer.

or, if you want to try new things, install linux or freebsd on it.

The monitor and computer can both run at least 1024x768 resolution. I'll try it with my bigger monitor.

Most likely a problem with the monitor or windows's standard video driver ain't working well your video card.

It was the monitor. I re-installed it using the monitor with my new computer, although I didn't want to use that new monitor with an older computer.
