Hey everyone, i need some help.
here's the URL for the page i'm asking about:

http://www.interbaun.com/services/serverfarming.asp

my question is:

ok.... what EXACTLY does 100MBps really mean? in another thread someone mentioned that it meant somewhere around 31640 Gigs per month. Is that true?

What is throughput? on that page it says in the 100 MBps plan that there's a "Throughput limit of 10 Gigs per month" What does that have to do with the 100 MBps?

or is that totally unrelated?

Well, Mbps = Megabits Per Second and in this context:

Bandwidth is a data transmission rate. The maximum amount of data (bits/second) that can be passed along a communications channel in a given period of time.

The wider the pipe, so to speak, the more data you can send through at one moment. Think of an empty pool with a drain. Now if it rains, water will empty down the drain. The larger the drain hole, the faster the water will drain out (both more water at one time, and more capacity overall to drain water).

Since a pipe has a fixed width, there is a top capacity (hard limit and abilty of the pipe to drain water from the pool when it fills up). Too much water in the pool (too much being more water than the pipe can drain out), would be a problem and would require a larger drain hole eventually.

The 31640 Gigs per month would be the capacity of the pipe, but bandwidth doesn't work this way, just as it doesn't rain the exact same amount all the time constantly. Since it doesn't rain the exact same amount all the time constantly, it is a bit harder to determine what size drain pipe you'll need.

For $250-$450/mo, they aren't going to give you the full pipe, at least I'd strongly doubt it. They might give you the foundation and connected equipment to handle 10Mbps and 100Mbps, but they are going to choke off the total transfer amount *and* limit your speed to either 10Mbps or 100Mbps.
