I am just wondering how often would you upgrade or move your old machine into a new machine. I mean one year ago, PII 500 with 128 Ram would cost you around $350. Now for the same price and traffic, you can lease a dedicated server with PIII 1Ghz with 1GB Ram. So from cost point of view. How often would you drop and old machine and move into a new ones??

i guess it depends on what u do
i would only start upgrading if my load average was high and things were slower
i mean just check
if things look good no real reason to upgrade
just wasting money if u ask me.

Depending on how much resources your server is using, I would upgrade about every 2 years, unless you are just hammering your server continuously, don't forget to call your provider and try to renegotiate your contract, though at that end of your term.

A server's average life span is 2-4 years.

I would agree with rackmy that a servers average life span is about 2 -4 years before is compeltly breaks down, but the life spam until its outdated and needs to be upgraded is usually less then a year.

Age depends on technology :D Avg age of any dedicated server is around 18-24months. Blame it on Intel/AMD for there new processors and NOC competition.

i guess its new proccessor is not required if you have average load of 1.0 or < 1.0.

but there is life span for every thing. i guess 4 years if enough to through your server in garbage because it becomes unreilable and can break at any time without notice. :D
