Hello,

We are a little ISP in Europe, with about 15 servers, and i have a question : Is it possible to limit the trafic from a server ? We want to limit the 'trougput' or trafic at 256 or 512 or 1024kb/s on some servers. If yes, how exactly ?
All our servers are behind a HP ProCurve 2524, so i think that it's impossible to deal with the switch. I read here that it's possible to do that with a Extreem Submit switch, but we are happy with HP ...
Thanks for any help, and sorry for my poor english, i'm french.
Best regards
Jean

There are lots of switches out there that can do it, but if you're happy with the one you have and you're good at admining it don't switch. If you're running linux/xbsd you can use a dummynet type thing. The linux 2.4 kernel can do lots of crazy traffic shaping stuff. It's not TOO tricky to config but it would have to be done on each machine you want to limit traffic on. Or if you want to do it a silly way you could set up a traffic shaping box on your switches uplink (between it and your drop) and shape traffic there, but if that dies so does everything else so that'd be silly.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply.
Is there a way to do that with a physical firewall ?
We are behind our ISP Firewall, but we think about to buy one, and use only this one (appart the software linux firewall).
Is something like that integrated with a Firebox, or any firewall solution that don't cost $10.000/year ?
Best regards
