View Full Version : reroute a domain to another server

We just signed up for a server at Rackspace - we have 165 domain names to change the nameserver for as we are managing our own DNS on the new system.

Is there a way to temporarily re-route a domain name on the old server to the new one?

Moving 165 domain names is going to take a while and we have already run into some trouble moving several of them -- so if there is any kind of temporary solution, please let me know.

Any ideas are appreciated! :)

i faced same problem long time back. the only way i found to change ip address with name server record with domain registrar. but it doesn't allowed me to do so because it was already assosicated with 100's of domains. so i need to change name server records for all.

this sucks.

just my Rs.1

What's even more of a pain is that we have to call some of our customers asking that when they get an email from Networksolutions regarding the nameserver change - they have to respond as they are the contact.

grr... They need to find a better way to do this sort of thing as I'm sure it happens all the time.

If I understand you correct; you are suppose to move 165
domain names to new DNS server?

As long as you have more than 50 domain names, Network
Solutions can do a bulk change for you. Most registrars will
be able to do a bulk change like this, (except OpenSRS which
is using a computer system from World War 2  )

Are you serious?!! That would save me DAYS worth of work!! How do I find out about bulk moves?

virtually this is not possible because niether every client have domain from nsi nor from opensrs.

and not every domain is associate with same techincal contacts and handels. so it doesn't help. bulk transfer is something else (i think) but changing bulk name server is . . . :(

This is the response I recieved from NSI when I asked a couple
of weeks ago:

If you have 50 domnain names or more, you should consider
using a "Global Update".

A global update is an identical modification to 50 or more
domain name records. For example, changing the registrant's
postal address, a contact or a host server on 50 or more
domain name records is considered a global update.

To request a global update, send an e-mail message with "Global Change"
in the subject line to hostmaster@networksolutions.com. The message
should be sent from the e-mail address of an authorized contact, as
listed in Network Solutions' database.

For frequently asked questions about global updates,
please visit our Web site at

Of course this will only help you if all of your domain names
(or at least 50) are registered through Network Solutions.

But as I said most registrars will be able to help you with
this. (Not only registrars for the gTLDs, but also registrars
for different ccTLDs. We recently did bulk changes on about
5.000 domains including .nu, .no, .as and com/net/org.)

We had to do everything manually with the 1000 domains we
needed to change with OpenSRS though. Won't forget that ;)

Thanks a ton for posting that!

I had a look at the info that they give on the "global change" and have forwarded it to the guy that's been deligated to do all the work. Hopefully NetSol will do this work for us!

Here is the revised URL to the page:

Thanks again :)

If the domains are at Network Solutions, it can be pretty simple.

1. Change the Authenication method of
your technical contact to Crypt password.

2. create a script that emails modification to hostmaster@networksolutions.com with your password in it.

3. Watch your mailbox for change confirmation.

It worked for me.
