I have a dedicated server at Pair Networks since January. Bandwidth over-usage used to be incredibly expensive, in the range of $ 7.50 per GB. Now Pair is working with tiers of 25 Gb per month which comes down to $ 3 per Gb.

Pair is still not the cheapest provider but if you want a fast network & high reliability then I can tell you from experience that they are among the best.

With the latest improvements I think that Pair QuickServe (www.quickserve.com) is worth having a look at.

Example QS2 configuration
- freeBSD
- Pentium III 1000 / 512 Mb
- 60 Gb bandwidth per month
- daily backup included
- $ 350 per month, no setup

They get points for donating a server to PHP.net. :)

Pair doesn't allow reselling on their Quickserve offerings, do they? The last time I read their TOS it basically said you couldn't run a web hosting business on their dedicated servers.

This is the one that caught my eye

11. Can I have root access on my server?

We do not make administrative privileges available to customers on QuickServe servers. We may or may not have a new "unmanaged" service in the future which provides this capability.

I've heard that if you talk to the right people they will let you have the root password. Probably there is a certain amount of IQ filtering going on as well, only giving root passwords to those people whom they think aren't going to screw stuff up and then need help.

pair installs their own FreeBSD kernel, Apache server and their proprietary control panel. They don't give you root but they will upgrade/patch the server when necessary. The servers are not for resale.
