I'm going to be starting a small web hosting company soon, and would like to know what the average person looks for in a company that offers-shared hosting, both in terms of the company itself - and what they offer.

Thanks!

Erm, I dont see any other way in answering so here goes:

What customers look for:

Customers first of all go for customer support. It is important that you have a strong knowledgeable staff, trained in whatever services you provide. Hosts usually specialize in NT or Unix hosting mostly. Other platforms are available but not as popular ( except maybe freebsd, me thinks ).

A lot of customers are smartening up when it comes to picking a host for there web sites. They look for a host that provids a decent amount of space and bandwidth, packed with features like mySQL, php, cgi, etc ( for Unix anyways, we won't get into windows ). They also look at the price. If its to low, sometimes its not always the best choice. They look for a more reasonable/modest price.

Heh, I think thats really the best I can do at the moment. Busy busy BUSY!!!!!!!!
