Hello,
I am researching various options for server solutions and am considering a dedicated server. If you rent a managed server (I'm currently looking a hostgator.com which I found through the posts on the board, but am open to other recommendations/opinions) -- with a serivce like this, how does installing software work? Can you install it yourself? Or do you have to have someone there do it? Or would I have to go to an unmanaged service to install my own stuff?

I do not feel confident that I could handle the security issues myself on an unmanaged systeam, so my next question would be -- if an unmanaged server is the way to go to install the software -- how does it work to hire a person to do the security? And what is a reasonable price range for that type of serivce?

thanks in advance for your responses,
sharon

Hi sselden,
It depends on the Managed Policy by the provider. I believe, most basic software can be installed by providers on a managed server without additional charges. I meant basic software is because there are tons of software on the internet. I doubt any server admin can fully master the installation & configurations.

As for dedicated servers, below are a few good providers:
www.gnax.com
www.ev1servers.net
www.rackspace.com
www.servermatrix.com / www.theplanet.com
www.dinix.com
www.liquidweb.com

Thanks.

What about the non-basic things?

It depends on the provider/server admin.

i think he is asking if he get a managed server , will he be allowed to install any software him self or he will have to get the server provider to install it for him.

if he means so i think he will be allowed to because i havent seen any server provider who does not allow you to install softwares on your own.

Thank you...yes, that was what I was asking. Sorry if I wasn't clear...I'm at the beginning of the learning curve.

Oh yes. I forgot to answer that question. I have answered only a provider of managed server will only install basic software.
