Hello,
I have never had a website before and i want to put a simple one up. I want to use it to keep pictures on so that i can link to it from the forums im a part of.
I also want it so i can play around with some php/perl scripting that im trying to learn.
I have a few questions. I have been looking around this forum for an hour or so and there are so many different hosting places that i have no clue who is good and who to stay away from. All i need is a few gigs per month of bandwidth and like 100-200 megs of storage.
This wont be a popular site where lots of people visit. The pics will be linked from other forums, but thats about it.
So can anyone recommend a few hosting companies for me? As you can see i have no complicated requests, just the basic necessities. Thanks

Hi,
I'm not going to point out any particular host, but what I would say is that your needs may be slightly high... you say yourself that it will be a simple site and it won't be that popular. In that case, you would be wasting money on extra space and bandwidth. You mention that you'll be having graphics / pictures on the site... are they likely to be quite large? If not, you may only need a couple of hundred MBs of bandwidth per month.
Just a friendly tip :)

Make sure the host will let you easily switch plans in case you miscalculate the bandwidth requirements also ;)

C'mon people, if you've used a host that fits the bill, let 'em know about it, and WHY you chose that host.

OK, I would recommend the following. 34sp are cheap, and have relatively good support (a bit of downtime recently, but nothing majorly bad).
34SP.com (http://www.34sp.com)
- 50Mb Space
- 600Mb Bandwidth
- MySQL (with PHPMyAdmin)
- Full CGI-BIN: Perl, PHP4, Java , Python, TCL and C/C++
- 10 x POP3 E-mails (no SMTP unforunately)
Cost : £20 per year (about $30)
Hope that helps :)

I'd recommend Ventures Online. They're well known on this forum for reliable service, and some of their staff also post here. You can see their plans at:

I would highly recommend not going with powweb. Though their prices are low, you basically get what you pay for. I developed a site for someone who was using them as a host and was very displeased. The server the site was on (mercury) was almost always slow and i had nothing but problems with the scripting.
I would, however, recommend Stratius (stratius.com). They're hosted on multiple t3s with a redundant backbone. They also provide great service. If you connect to their irc server there's almost always one of them there to help you with whatever you need.
UPDATE: I forgot something about powweb. They don't allow telnet or ssh access to their server, only ftp so if you'd like to code on the server without ftp'ing it's not possible.

If you are only linking pictures to forums, there are free hosts that are out there.
