View Full Version : backing up a win2k server . . . ideas ?

Lo all,

I've just taken on a dedicated win2k server and am more than a little paranoid about backups . .

An image of the drive is taken daily by the hosting company - strictly for use in the event of a drive failure, it's not available to me. So I'm covered in case of hardware failure.

I also have an extra drive attached to the machine where I will copy user data, the IIS metabase etc. no problems.

However the scenario that worries me is installing a MS patch or getting a virus or similar whereby the server is rendered unusable ( server is all patched up to date but you never know . . )

I can't get the drive restored by the hosting company and although I have all the raw data saved on the spare drive I've lost all the permissions etc. and face a day or two's work getting everything running right again.

Is anyone aware of any software that would allow me to make a complete backup of the server, whilst it's running, to the spare drive ?

I spoke to powerquest ref. their drive image software but they say its no go for servers :-/

Ta in advance . . . . .

You can use the built in NT Backup program or we recommend Retrospect by Dantz.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info.

I'd assumed that the built in backup would be nothing more than a glorified copy command, but following your post I checked it out and it seems that it will keep all the permissions etc. in place :D

I'll look into the other one you suggested - cheers.
