I have been interested in seting up a place to host websites for a while but lack alot of the know how. Lots of it is easy enough, such as, setting up the computer to host off of, and things in that area, but i have alot of trouble with the scripting areas, and i am wondering if anyone knows any nice file manager progs out there that i can use. I am currently running on a windows OS, but looking at the possibilty to switching to a linux machine. If anyone has any answers, then please let me know. I'll be eagerly awaiting your replies.

Hmm,,
Best advice... drop the windows Idea... go with linux, and you will be more than glad you did. Windoz is great for home PCs and special aps servers, but are much higher upkeep, and generally double the cost to run than a linux server.

Thanks for the reply. I never used a linux server before, do you think it will take a very long time to get the basics of it down?

My advice is that ypu either get a cheap machine and installs Linux on it at home. You often get a distribution on CD of it when you buy a Linux book - and buying a book it necessery...
Or you could try dual-boot your current machine so you have both Windows and Linux on it - but that depends on how you have formatted your hard disk partitions.
Step 1 anyway is to download Apache ( and maybe PHP ) for your Windows machine to start getting familiar with the Apache configuration files - which is a must to know.
You ask, will take a very long time to get the basics of it down? Well, are you familiar with using a command prompt??? If so you will soon be able to handle most day-to-day tasks, like copying, moving, editing files. Lots of commands are named differently, like cp instead of copy etc but they work pretty much the same. However, if you aren't familiar with a command prompt I'd say you will have a long way to go.
For installation tips etc and other problems I have found Deja.com to be a great resource.
