What is so special in vBulletin that put it in front of the others ?

Is it worth the price ?

Post your comparaison

Just give me Invisionboard (2.0) its cleaner and have a little more features sometimes:P

Vbulletin sucks cuz you need to pay for everything!!

The price you pay for vBulletin is simple: it gives you support. If vBulletin breaks, you know for a fact that you can turn to their devteam for help, while with unpaid ones, you're stuck. killerguy, vBulletin doesn't suck, since you're paying for the support they give you. Even ipB wants you to pay for support.

phpBB 2.0.x is a very basic forum. It is efficient, but lacks many things the others do, which will be added in 2.2.x.

ipB is a close runner up with vBulletin, but if you want support, you need to pay for it.

Hope that helps a bit. :)

IPB does have a great free support?

phpBB does have a lot of mods that can make it as good as the paid ones as well as an active community. Takes a bit of work, but its free. Take your pick: which is a higher premium, your time or cash.

IPB is what I'd recommend.

The IPB community is fairly large so chances are you won't need to go to the devs with your support issues. But if you DO need them, you can always pay for their time.

I don't know, I like phpBB because there is such a huge community for it...... for example phpbbhacks.com - if you take the time to modify your board with all the hacks you want, you could essentially get all the features of other boards and more!

But I haven't used vbulletin in 2-3 years, and never used invision, so I don't know how recent versions compare

I would personally go for vBulletin.

id personally go with invision at the moment but its very hard to choose between invision and VBulletin. phpbb IMO doesnt come near to those two.

I'm just curious..... what is everyone basing their opinion on which board is "better" on?
Support? Capabilities? Options? Reliability? What?

Personal preference. I love phpBB, i respect vBulletin (good, but i prefer phpBB) and i hate IPB (ugly, bloated).

I love phpBB above the others because it is free. No not just cost free but, it is under the GPL (Glorious People's License)! :D

That is all I need to know. ;)

I am using IPB on 15 different sites I maintain the forums on. I tried phpBB but did not care for it...mostly as I am too used to IPB and I admit it. I also worked with vBulletin

My choices are (in order)

1. IPB
2. vBulletin
3. phpBB
4. yaBB

Based on my experience with the forum i am currently running. Invisionboard is an excellent powerfull free board. I recommend you to go for IPB.

1 issue remains un-explained for me.
Why are very popular and famours sites always using vb. WHT, Nuclearbox, gurn.net, etc and why not ib.

The only 3 sites that i have seen that big forum usage and online members are the ib site, ibplanet, and my own site.

I am going to restart my forums to get them re-organised and rid of the mods that make them slow in script generation times. I dont know whether i should be using vb or ib, but so far i am with ib, i am just waiting until the final release of 2.0 is out then i am re-doing my forums.

IPB > everything

i've used all 3 in the past, IPB is king.

I'm going to have to disaggree with you. If you wish to skin your forum I suggest phpBB because it's free. Also, phpBB is updated alot more then ipb to clear up known bugs.

IPB is free, and IPB has a better template editor.
'

what was the last version of IPB you used? you are probably judging by something you saw in the 1.1.2 release, when there were massive improvements on IPB from 1.1.2 to 1.2 to 1.3 .
