Hi all,

I am currently in the process of setting up my own hosting company. The person I am getting my server space from has allocated me two IPs and he tells me to use these as nameservers I have to contact the company I registered the domain with. I am in the UK and I registered the domain with easily.co.uk. I emailed them to ask them to se-up the nameservers for me. Was this the correct thing to do? If so what is involved in setting up nameservers and how long does it normally take?

Thanks in advance
Neil

Go to your registar where you bought your domain. Then go to add a name server.

Take your IP adresses and enter them into the fields and name your name servers whatever you want to. For example

343.232.231.213 -- IP ADDRESS
NS1.YOURCOMPANY.COM

242.112.23.211 - IP ADDRESS 2
NS2.YOURCOMPANY.COM

Thanks for your reply James but the problem is there isn't such an option with my registar. That is why I thought I would email them. I was just wanting to know how long this is likely to take and what is involved in setting them up.

Thanks
Neil

A name server record is AKA Host Record.

Normally you go to http://www.networksolutions
and fill out a host record to add your name server and ip

However, this is a ridiculous problem if the domain is not
registered by NSI Verisign, whoever they are now.

The correct way to do it although awful, is to first create a contact record at NSI, then you have to call them up and probably fax something to then and have them add the domain guardian to this contact record From there you can then add or update your host record for that domain.

Another way to do it is contacting your registrars support.
They can go directly into the host records to add this infomation for you. However, These days most registrars are resellers and not true accredited registrars and cannot get this accomplished. The ones that probably can do this are Dotster.com and Register.com

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for your help Mike :)

I need the nameservers set-up asap so I might set them up on the .co.uk name rather than the .com. I've been told that nameservers can be set-up on a co.uk in less than 24 hours so I may need to do this.

Thanks again

How do you intend on running a hosting company if you don't know about Name Servers?

Cheers Mike I got it sorted and they say it will take 72 hours but hopefully it will done sooner.

Abzug, the reason I posted this thread was to find out about nameservers. I thought that was the whole point of this forum that if people want to learn something then they asked questions and people helped them out. We all have to start somewhere and its a gradual learning curve.

I thought it was a good question, It's really a joke on how NSI can continally be a business with these pathetic practices and awful services. It is extremely confusing, and from my own experience, a total nightmare, of something that is so simple as
abc.
