Well I was all set to do business with Tera-Byte last month and then a health problem came up. Now when I look some items are bothering me.

1) recent info on billing problem and snap cutoff of services read about here.

2) they advise if bandwidth goes over allowed amount you go dead no warning. You have to monitor. What if a mistake happens at their end. I would sooner they bill me the extra $10.00 bucks whatever for the month and sort it out later not have the site go down.

3) They have allowed a link to their site on http://www.guideclick.com/123finder/tera-byte-hosting-plans.htm
terms for their basic plan are not the same as they list on their site. I realize their info is what counts but haven't seen a great effort to get the wrong info on 123finder changed.

I need to keep the cost down as my site will basically be used as a vanity site for my wife and other artists to display their art. Only need about 10 mb storage and transfer would be less than 3 gb in the beginning. If things grow then I realize I would have to pay more. What I would also like is a manager screen, cgi about 10 emails and stat reports. Also would like to be able to set up password for directories so that I could possibly allow the other artists to control their pages.

Anyone got any recommendations for a reliable host in the $60.00 a year range which offers what I need.

$60 yr /12 = $5 mo.
I dont think your gonna find much at all in that price range that is "reliable". I would do a search here through these threads and think realisticly about what you expect to pay. If your already using 3gig to start, the cheapest of bandwidth for hosts is about $3/gig and the average is about $5 . In either case they would lose $$ on a $5 mo. deal just in bandwidth usage alone. Not to mention being able to reach support when its really needed. You get what you pay for. Not trying to be harsh and I apologize if this sounds that way but that is not the intent here. Just trying to help :)

Don't worry about hurting feelings.
Actually I doubt that the site would use even 1 gig for some time. If it started to get into 2-3 gig I would be the first to agree more moolah needed by the host.

The 3 gig figure was used because thats the number on Tera-Byte.com lowest cost plan.

Well...

I've only been with tera-byte for just under a month, so my opinion may be a bit green still.. but so far it's been fine.

I figured that there must be some kind of catch - their prices just seemed way, way too cheap compared to anything else I had seen around. To make matters worse, Tera-byte is the company that runs Spaceports.com, which is a free web hosting outfit. My opinion about nearly all of the "free" ad-revenue based Internet business is - As if. This kind of business model is NOT viable.

So, my major concerns were uptime, speed and just how long a company can stay afloat when they've a free, ad-revenue service hanging off one side... but, like the initial post, I wanted a cheap site to put up a "vanity" site... so I figured why not.

Well, I've had my site monited by a server testing service, and uptime has been impeccable. Speed has been quite good... and for the amount of transfer you get, unless you're going to post naughty pictures of yourself, I'm sure you'll be fine.

As I said, though, I've only been with them for a month, and my vanity site has yet to go completely live... so I haven't really put them through their paces, yet. I'll report back here once I have.
