Quit surviving and start escalating your web hosting sales now.
By Terence Lau

In the early days of the web, getting your hosting services noticed was relatively easy, but now, as the number of websites on the Web has grown astronomically, the chances of your hosting services appearing on the first few pages of site directories and search engines are getting slimmer.

In fact, many hosting companies are still under the impression that by building a sign-up site and submitting URL to search engines alone will improve business and rack up sales. Sadly, that is clearly impossible now.

Quit surviving and start escalating your web hosting sales. Here are some techniques.

Marketing outside the U.S.
Are your advertising efforts focused mainly on the U.S? IDC said that by 2003, Internet spending would reach $1.64 trillion. Two-thirds of this projected amount will come from outside the US, with Japan and Western Europe expected to make up 47% of this on-line spending, while in China, there are already approximately 22 million Internet users, and market penetration is expected to grow to more than 60 million by 2005, an increase of almost 300%. In fact, the interactive medium is expected to grow so fast in China that some observers predict Chinese will be the most used language on the Internet by the year 2007.

Concentrating your marketing efforts on the U.S or publishing in local magazines will eventually leave one-half of the potential revenue on the table. Chinese users searching for "" will never find you. Turkish users searching for web hosting services in "web barindirma" will never click your site or French users searching for "Web Hébergement" and "hébergement de serveurs web" will click to your competitor’s site.

Since 97% of the world speaks just 24 languages, you can quickly take advantage of this foreign market by building relevant foreign keywords in your doorway pages and submit these web pages to top 10 search engines to improve site visibility. (Doorway pages are duplicated web pages or gateway pages with specific title keywords optimized for a particular search engine) You can translate specific keywords like "Web hosting" or "Virtual hosting" to other foreign words quickly at http://www.altavista.com/sites/babelfish.

You can also engage in small marketing campaigns on targeted websites in European or Asian countries. Because online advertisement space outside U.K., Canada and the U.S, is generally inexpensive, purchasing advertising space on targeted websites from other countries can produce good results.

Boost your web hosting sales with user reviews
One of the ways to boost your business in the right direction is to tell your users to review your hosting services at several hosting directory sites. Reviews "speak" to potential customers in a straightforward and convincing way. The words of a satisfied customer are commanding tools for endorsing trust, building your credibility, and improving sales and profitability. The best thing about this, is it’s absolutely free and well worth the effort as most user reviews are permanent on hosting directory sites, and hence, giving your website a lasting free URL link back to your web site. To do this, you can either insert small buttons of hosting directories on your site to allow your users to review your services quickly or email your users monthly and notify them about reviewing your services.

Make full use of free publicity.
Another thing I have discovered is that hosting companies do not utilize press releases. Every hosting company can benefit from writing news releases, but very few actually utilize them. Below are some ideas you can use for a press release:

Launch of new hosting features.
Launch of new control panel, new support system, instant setup system, and wireless ready plans.
New network infrastructure installation.
New data centers, enhanced network system and new backbone connection
Hosting an event.
Hosting a live web cast, hosting celebrity chats, sponsoring a sports show and radio show
Forming a new partnership.
Alliance with merchant providers, and partnership webmaster sites
Affiliation, endorsement and contest.
Endorsement from associations, awards from hosting directories, ratings from other sites and announcement of contests winners
Sales growth
Announcement of strong growth despite economy, venture funds received and grants
Solid press coverage could increase awareness of your hosting services, help build credibility, and create a competitive edge. Harnessing its power can easily get you and your business in front of thousands of potential customers and can create an avalanche of traffic for your site.

As with everything in the world of marketing, distribute your press releases only to targeted audience sites, market and media outlets. To increase the chances of your news being selected, mail and fax your press release to the relevant person or department in that organization. You can also submit to sites that accept news. A press release that is published on a targeted audience site gives unbiased endorsement for your company that could lead to great returns. Some of the links below allow you to submit your press release in the area of your receptive audience. Remember to book mark these sites.

<<EDIT>>

Describe your hosting plans, network infrastructure and reseller options in details.
Motivational speaker Anthony Robbins once said, “If you want to be successful, find someone who achieved the results you want and copy what they do, and you’ll achieve the same results.”

Before you spend a lot of time overhauling your website and adding in new features to your hosting plans, examine successful hosting companies or competitors sites. Take a closer look. The stories of successful hosting companies share at least one common element. Other than providing fanatical support and building an excellent relationship with their customers, these hosting companies describe their hosting plans and options available in complete detail. For instance, instead of saying "FrontPage Extension", you can write "Support FrontPage Extension and the latest FrontPage 2002"

Here are some examples.

Avoid: 30 Pop Email Accounts
Use: 30 Pop Email Accounts with Web based access

Avoid: Web Statistics
Use: IISA 5.0 Web Statistics with real time Who’s On

Avoid: 99.5% Uptime Guarantee
Use: 99.954% Uptime Guarantee

Avoid: Perl Support
Use: Support the latest Perl 5.61 version

Avoid: IIS web server
Use: IIS5.0 web server

Avoid: Bandwidth
Use: Monthly Traffic Allowance

Avoid: Reseller Option
Use: Ability to reseller your web space

Avoid: Server Monitoring
Use: 24 Hour server monitoring

Avoid: Connected with UUNET and Cable & Wireless
Use: AT&T, UUNet, Level3, and Global Crossing Backbones. SONET Ring technology with dual OC-12 and multiple DS-3 fiber optic lines for backbone fail over. Bandwidth capacity kept at twice the peak usage rate. BGP-4 routing protocol provides stable, efficient and intelligent routing

Avoid: Free Shopping Cart
Use: Free Miva Shopping Cart (Value $495)

Avoid: FTP Access
Use: Full FTP Web Root Access

Avoid: Sub Domains
Use: 5 sub domains. e.g. Okey.companyname.com

Avoid describing your hosting services with general words like "world leader in web hosting", "best value anywhere", "the fastest setup service in Mexico" or "fastest connection with Dual OC-12". Help your Internet users to understand what you actually offer and describe it in detail.

Target, pay much lesser and advertise.
Why advertise when your competitors do not? Increase advertising as many of your competitors are thoughtlessly slowing down and you can grab a share of the web hosting pie. Many Webmaster sites and search engine sites have reduced their web advertising cost to alleviate empty advertising space. Negotiate and find out some of the best offers before committing with the usual publishers. It is of utmost importance to find sites that are receptive to your hosting services. To battle the slow economy, many publishers are compelled to offer discounts, and if you are still paying more than US$20 CPM or more for a top-of-page banner on a targeted site, most likely you have missed out many advertising offers out there. With or with no click-through, banners help you to build your positive brand association with your hosting services, heighten company visibility internationally. So the next time when users want or have to sign-up for a hosting service, they can quickly recall your site name.

That is a great article. However I'm curious as to why our beloved Chicken edited it...

That is an article written by Terence from HostPulse, but because of the strict forum policy many things cannot be presented as it is.
Terence is extremely frustrated. It seems that contributing news as it is, is also a violation

I received an email from Chicken saying I have violated the policy , etc and etc. Yes, I am was quite annoyed to get those silly email messages.

I have told you Chicken that I want to leave this. Infact, Terence called me to leave too since this forum has a lot of silly restriction.

Spamming is wrong. Mass advertising without considering about other people in this forum is also wrong. But if the discussion is about a topic that is relevant [just like this article], there shouldn't be any full enforcement of the forum policies, because the discussion is about the subject, not about self-promotion. Other users sees it as a great article to read, but some moderators may take it as a threat to their business. I don't think moderators should think that way. We are here to discuss about business ideas, encourage users about hosting options and find ways to build a better community.

Could you please delete "Collief" record from this forum, because I want to leave and I am still getting email from users replying to my post.

Thank you very much.

Dominet,

That is the original version minus a link to HostPulse where Hosting companies can post their press release or news.

My signature in this forum has been cancelled too.

Phew. Excellent forum.

Just finished reading that excellent article.

Thanks for posting it ...even though it is not the original version :erm: ...it is still a must read for a those in the hosting industry.

 Well if the article included a PAY service for HostPulse, I think that's good eyes to Chicken for yanking it. If it's a free service offered, well heck, I've pointed people to an information page on my own domain simply because I wanted to share information, didn't make a penny, and never got edited... hmmmmmmm

HOWEVER I also don't think it's necessary to get our undies in a bunch. Chicken's just doing his job and he does a great job at that. I must defer to his judgement. He's usually right-on.

AND .... :D That's a FABULOUS piece of writing. Thanks for sharing it!!!!!!! I am really impressed. Going to zip on over to my site tonight and do some tweaking while I'm thinking about it. The suggestions seem well-rounded and sensible.

I also bet that most of us could figure out where to find those edited features at HostPulse's site... hmmmmmmm :erm:

:D Wow. Thanks for sharing!

collief, don't get a depression ;)
If Chicken would have allowed an article with links to a payed service one day later I would have posted a very interesting article about hosting with lots of tips but with some links to my own service. If the mods ever let there a grey zone this forum would be swamped by ads.

Nice article, but it sounds far to much like a motivational mix to me. A very good copywriter once said: Keep it simple, stupid.

In my opinion , a lot of hosting companies give the appearance of being very successful. I know of one particular hosting company which owns almost a thousand RAQ servers, from the outside they look very impressive, lots of clients, big datawarehouse, plenty of support staff etc, but on the inside they are losing the battle.

From memory, wasn't that article posted here a month or two ago? I remember it being edited then after it was found the poster slipped in some advertising. My guess Chicken remembers it to as he was fast on the edit (as he should be). Now what would have been nice was if the writer could offer some advice and give their thoughts on a subject without feeling the need to try to get some financial milage out of it.

Rules are good. But when you become a fanatic about keeping the rules... then its just a pain in the A**

I'm not trying to be fanatical about the rules, just enforce them. We don't allow you to post your URL in posts in the main forums. Simple. I spend a couple hours a day helping people and removing the garbage on the forums just so we all have a clean forum to come to that is as free as possible of shameless advertising. We do allow advertising, you may post your URL, discuss your service or product, in the advertsing forums.

Site5-Matt & dominet
As collief said, "That is the original version minus a link to..." that's it. Nothing else is changed, just the self promotional link which was among those in a list which forum members were encouraged to, "Remember to book mark these sites."

collief
As I told you twice via email, the article was fine, no problem. The link to your site was NOT. Terrance being fustrated has nothing to do with this and he has a site and can post articles there if he wants, and is welcome to post things here but may not post links within the article and sugest that members go to the site and bookmark it.

"It seems that contributing news as it is, is also a violation." - not sure what you mean Collief, but as I said in my private emails to you, it is not the news that is the problem. You may post any news article you'd like, though if you copy it from your site, to post it here, you may have to alter it to comply with the guidelines of this site.

If you don't want those 'silly' messages, then do not promote your site here in the main forums. The board spammers are always really annoyed and childish when it comes to accepting that they are not able to post their own URLs where they want. As I told you via email, if you are not willing to accept the terms for posting here, you (and Terrance whom I've never spoken to), would be better off just to move along elsewhere. Our aim is not to ban, censor, or ask people to leave, but sometimes we have to do these things, and sometimes it is best if members go elsewhere.

You brought up this topic (started the thread), and no, spamming your URL within it is not revelvant. Sorry. "Other users sees it as a great article to read..." One last time, it is not the article that is the problem. Not sure how to express this in another way, other than the 3 ways I've attempted to express it.

Note: User owns the site he was promoting and suggesting members bookmark, see:

Aloha

well I agree and disagre with some things
I must say that the KISS principle can be good to much info can look clutered while not offering enough can hurt to

I guess if we all read certain things into what we read then we must start to clarify more
IE we see bandwith but our mind thinks Unlimited bandwith then it would be good to switch to another term

but changing words just to change words ?????

it sounds like this was written to be slighty informitive and a lot of advertising for someones site
as he is trying to see MIVA and web based email etc...

I am not sure putting the perl 5.61 or whatever is to much information what if it has a bug and a friend says dont get perl 5.61
or you forgot to update that part of the site it can backfire on you

very well written and some good points though ;)

Wouldn't you agree thought, that putting your apache version, mysql version, linux version and any other daemon/kernal/os version on your site is like telling someone the exact layout of your house.

To much detail will, believe it or not, make your system more prone to crack/hack attacks. Save the technical stuff for when they ask you directly and even then only tell them if they need to know, don't be afraid to say "I'm sorry we can't give you that information, but I can assure we use the most recent secure builds".
