View Full Version : Hosting Guide, have I got most of it covered?

If anyone has read the Hosting Requests forums then you'll already know that I own a site owner resource site. One of the new features I am working on at the moment is a more detailed guide to help people choose a suitable host.

Since many of you in here will have had much more experience with hosting than I have (the hosts I've had I can count on one hand) - I just wanted to check that I got the more important aspects covered.

So far my guide is split into 12 pages - here is an outline of what they will cover.

1. The importance of a good host
2. Tips for building your checklist
3. The effects of sharing your server with others
4. Server software and OS choices (covering NT/2000, *nix, Apache, IIS)
5. Basic features you can expect as standard
6. Data transfer and bandwidth, difference of and estimating each
7. File support, mime types and a bit about how servers use them
8. Scripting support, ASP, Perl, PHP, JSP and Front Page Extensions
9. Databases various types and support based on software being used
10. Selling from your site, features to look for
11. Multimedia support, streaming media/audio
12. Questions you may want to ask, ready made questions to help you come up with your own ideas

Have I missed anything out?

At the moment the bulk of the guide up to page 8 is done, but I am sketchy on things such as *nix, Apache and related technologies - and have had no hands on experience with multimedia (other than a few midi's) or ecommerce. However I do not wish to leave these areas uncovered as they will make a difference to a choice of host.

If anyone can recommend any good reference sites for anything non-windows (ASP and Perl are well covered) other than the usual places, can you please share.

On another note, I will probably want to have a few hosting links to give people reading this... but I'm unsure of how to go about it... I'll probably invite you all to add your links if I can get something sorted. I really want to get this hosting guide finished off before I go creating links anyway...

Thanks for your time... looking forward to your suggestions.
