Hi,
I want to build my own server (pc) and colocate it somewhere. I'm not familiar with unix or linux. Where should I start? What do you need to get the server up and going? What programs do I need to install?
Thanks in advance.

Start with windows. :)
Or get a dedicated where you can at least get support.

If you're not familiar with Unix/Linux, then you should get a RaQ4 server from RackShack.net. I think they are recommended by everyone for starters.

Thanks for your respond.
I already have a rack at rackshack and a linux box at Dialtone (over a yr, so I guess i have a little experience with linux). The rack can't handle my load. I get a load of 40-70 during peak. The box at Dialtone can handle my load but i don't like how they rip me off. So I want my own server and colocate.
I want to order a server from http://qsol.com and colocate it at tera-byte.com. The thing is, it comes with Red Hat OS already.
The question is: Do I need to configure it to work? do I need to install other programs? I'm confused???
Please help!

You can order a server from Qsol without the operating system (and save $40!), which is probably best. You're going to want a copy of Red Hat 7.x anyway, so either download it from redhat.com or buy a boxed copy. Since you're not too familiar with Linux, you're probably going to need some kind of control panel. Plesk has one of the best single-server control panels around, and you can purchase a license based on the number of domains you're planning to put on the server (and you can even get a one-domain lincense free to experiment with). If you want to go a less-expensive route, look in to Webmin (http://www.webmin.com).
I don't know where you live, but you might want to find a place close to your home where you can collocate. That way you can go in and restore the operating system if you want to experiment or if something goes wrong down the road. Once you get comfortable with running the server, you're safer in using a remote collo like Tera-byte.

Thanks for your info.
One stupid question:
After, installing Red Hat 7.1 does
Apache, Bind, Senmail..etc come along?

Apache, Bind, Senmail..etc come along? All of those things are included on the RH 7.x CDs. If you choose the default "Server" installation, all those will be installed. Depending on what you want to do though, you can also choose a custom install and pick and choose what you want (this is good for something like Plesk, because they provide Apache, etc. when you install, and from what I've heard it's better to not have these services installed and let the Plesk installer install them for you).
