Hello our site has gotten the the point where we now need a dedicated server and i need to decide what to get.
we have used a cobalt before but on that host the scripts just killed it however they are very well scripted and on an unix apache run flawless so i dont know about going cobalt
we are at about 180,000 hits aday
it is basically a file archive site with about 1,000 files
and around 250 gigs a month of transfer
right now we are at 900 megs of space so a large amount of storage is not needed
i have designed the entire site in a php msyql script
what would server would work best with this type of site
thanks =)

you have 2 options
email ed@pwebtech.com and ask for a quote
or
www.rackshack.net (300 GB fo 99$ a month)
Personally I perfer pwebtech over rackshack

No way I would use a RAQ for that. Well I wouldn't use a RAQ for anything really...but that is my own prejudice. Anything high end like this I really wouldn't put on a RAQ. What happens if you grow, are you going to move everything to a new server...with a RAQ you will have to...with a PC you can upgrade.

Really? Didn't realize these two companies had a monopoly on the entire industry :-)

Technically speaking, if its two companies; its a duopoly not monopoly :D
I wouldnt recommend RAQ either... they arnt good for dynamic sites with heavy traffic.

technically speaking:
One a monopoly on RAQs
One a monopoly on Linux PCs
heh...
This counts as a post right?
gotta reach 1000 now...new goal :-)

Hi,
I'd recommend something like the following setup:
P3 800
256MB RAM
20GB HD (leaves you room for growing)
This server will cope with the load you're describing and most likely much more.
I wouldn't put such a website on any Cobalt RAQ. That's just like asking for trouble, in my opinion.
Thanks,

I think you should go for at least 512MB ram... if not more. Go for dual CPU too... it handles traffic a lot better, specially at peak times. You might want to go for a HDD less than 20GIGs, probably something like 5/10 ... should leave you plenty of room for expansion.
just my 2 cents

Ok now for another ?
colo's =)
i could build a system like this super cheap almost at the cost of a night out on the town
lets say i build a dual p3 866, 768 ram, 30 gig hd,
and try and get that colocated
is that possible cuz i have that mainboard bundle right here in multiples
and how reliable is colo, as far as if stuff goes wrong
breakdowns
do you think this is maybe a way to go also ?

I hear affordablecolo.com is good for colo... If you need a ton of bandwidth you might want to wait for RackShack's Linux offer though.

I would say go with Linux, say Redhat. Woohoo..
Since your whole site is using scripts, I would definately colo with your own server and not on a raq.
I've also heard affordablecolo is a good one.. Rackshack should be breaking into the colo market and I'm anxious to see pricing/features..
