View Full Version : Personal Raq

What should I be aware of as far as limitations on a Raq that I want to use for personal sites and perhaps a few for my friends. Is there a limitation on flexibility, ie: named pop & smtp servers, subdomains, etc.? I'd be getting it for the flexibility and cpu, which I assume will blow off shared servers.

Where would be a good place to sign up for one and where are good places to study up on them or get help (besides here)?

Do any Raq hosting outfits have -zero- setup fees? My wife opens my credit card bills....;)

Thanks!

this is by far one of the best places to learn more about the raq. just read through the many pages of posts and take your time.

other good places:

cobalt users lists
http://www.cobalt.com/support/resources/usergroups.html

cobalt raq forums

rackshack forums

4webspace forums

there's few if any places that offer $0 setup. if so, they charge outrageous monthly fees. (i've seen places charging $50 for setup but $299 a month for a raq3. crazy stuff.)

raq4 - $250 setup + $99 a month. 300gb bandwidth

raq3 = $99 a month. i can't find how much setup. dunno the bandwidth.

are two of the most popular at least in this forum. there are a few good posts on raq host companies.

i use a raq4i w/ 512mb from server rack as a dedicated server for one of my high bandwidth/resource websites(i also have 2 more small static sites on it), and have been EXTREMELY pleased with their support(haven't really had a huge emergency yet though) and performance. if they offered a tad more bandwidth and a few more IP's they'd be perfect in my opinion.

http://www.serverrack.net/
raq4i w/128mb ram = $100 setup + $95 a month. 65gb bandwidth.
AND, a one-time charge to go from 128 -> 512mb ram.

hope those links help.

Rackshack sounds pretty good. I dunno if I'd ever use 300 gigs. I'd rather have 200 gigs and a way to reboot the server. :)

I swung by serverrack.net and they still have their specials up, but the offer was over on Oct. 31. Now the setup fee is $200.

What kind of connectivity do they have? Their web site says nothing on the subject. No support BBS.. it looks like this place is real NEW... eh? I just noticed the June 2001 rollout date. Another plus would be the lack of sales tax vs. rackshack.

Thanks for the tips on where to get info. I need to study up on this.

I'm real happy that I got the Raq. It is all pretty easy so far.

NVM...

Zero setup fee is doable if you pre-pay for a full year.

Cobalt are a pain I guess to update it. You have to do it in sequence, the right kind of seq. I guess it takes time and at least few hours from my understanding.

If it was me, as a newbie.. it would take me a whole day.
