mahinder 11-04-2001, 06:31 AM my server xxxxxxxx (setup on 20 nov 2001) at burst.net is down since
last 3 hrs (1:10 pm (+5:30 GMT))
i emailed them the moment it gone down (i was online at the time because i issued reboot command [shutdown -r now])
here is the domain and ip you can ping or tracert
coolbikinibabes.com
66.96.247.85
i tried tracerouting through different web sites around the world (for example privacy.net) but all shows it is down. i have sent them email to sales, support, sysadmins but no response. i have also sent them icq but now repose yet.
its been roughly 456 hrs since server went online and it is down for 3hrs. which cross there 99.5% uptime guarantee.
do you think i deserve refund if I cancel my server with them. ?
also when my server was setup i emailed sean that is my server setup for mointoring and he said yes ?
> server = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
> dear sir,
> i recently purchased the server (4-5 days) back. i want you to confirm
> following on my server:
> 1. server is setup for monitoring for downtime.
confirmed.
......

i can monitor your site/s using my server monitoring station :D , keep in mind this one is running 24/7 on an NT server and it goes down for a reboot every 3 days or so..
what i need is the email address where to send the message so the server monitoring station can email you automatically.

What program do you use? Is it software that pings a IP once every minute and sends a alert once theres no reponse? Would be cool to have something like that on my PC. Have it play one of my mp3s or a wav file if one of the servers on the server list stops replying.

hey try this
C:\>ping coolbikinibabes.com
Unknown host coolbikinibabes.com.
also all services are down. like telnet, pop, smtp, apache,
i wonder what they monitor ?
its been 4 hours and 30 mintues and my server is still down and no reply.
also they are offline on ICQ. can somebody call burst.net noc and check weather anyone there and inform that my server is down.
:(
MCHost-Marc 11-04-2001, 08:11 AM can you log into SSH? if yes, send the command /sbin/reboot and see if it comes back up. i'd say give them a call and they can probably get your server back up shortly.
mahinder 11-04-2001, 08:16 AM ALSO TRY THIS
http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=ping&Netnic=whois.arin.net&host=coolbikinibabes.com
and you will get this.
Ping
[coolbikinibabes.com]
Bad destination

Average time over 10 pings: 0 ms
also try this
http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=trace&Netnic=whois.arin.net&host=coolbikinibabes.com
you will get this
Lookup Failed. No IP address or host name with a valid lookup in input
i tried tracerouting my burst server from my vdi.net server and it fails.

OT: why not use a service like http://www.qwkmon.net ?
i don't need server monitoring service because i have 24 hrs staff. we check every server every minute and if it goes down then
:D ;)
i can handle anything accept down time. also 5 emails so far and 1 account closed and refund issued because of this down time.
node9 11-04-2001, 08:26 AM still down i see.

i just called burst.net before i complete call cut down. look like some problem with my land line or card balance expired. its JHON H. he just sent me email requesting my root password.
i feel good now
;)
downtime until now: 5 hours.
mahinder 11-04-2001, 08:48 AM my server is just went up. total downtime was 5 hours 10 minutes.
what do you think i should do now ?
better i ask them the reason why they did not monitor my server.
mahinder 11-04-2001, 09:35 AM the explanation i am getting from them is totally horrible but i don't want to disclose right now.
better I email Sean and ask for re-assurance that my server will not go down again.
better i should have issued shutdown -h now, when i got my server and checked it weather it is on mintorered properly or not before activating any account on it.
WildWayz 11-04-2001, 09:45 AM They cannot gaurentee that your server will not go down again, as you could do something to fluff it up.
When they say "24/7 monitoring" they usually mean network monitoring and not server monitoring.
I mean, if you have cpanel every night it checks for an update and kicks out bind/apache (well, at least it does on mine).
Same rule applies when I host says "99.9% uptime guarentee" - how can they guarentee your PC is up all the time?
What if you done "/sbin/shutdown now" then blamed them for downtime to get credit/refund?

Two comments...
One, downtime is most likely measured at the end of the month, not as you go. If, at the end of the month, the server hasn't been up for 95.5% (or whatever they guarantee according to the terms you agreed to), then you should be entitled to whatever refund is specified in the contract.
What I mean is, if the server was turned on at 1 p.m. and went down at 2 p.m. for an hour, you shouldn't caluculate that the server has only had a 50% uptime and demand a refund that month.
Also, I thought that Sean has posted that the server offers come with a 30 day money back guarantee, though I don't know if that is standard, or if it is special to some offers, or what, but check your agreement.

this is not the case here since i confirmed with sean that my server is monitored 24 hrs. why he confirmed then. ?

i don't want to cancel account with them neither i bother refund, i think they are good but 5 hours constant downtime ...
i didn't expected this and nobody will.

24 x 30 days x 0.005 (0.5% downtime) = 3.6 hrs
my server was down for 5 hours. constant.
BurstNET 11-04-2001, 10:20 AM Your server is monitored 24/7.
We have had staff on all thru the time of the incident as well...one of which was John H.
Not sure why it was down, or if it was even down.
Looks like itwas rebooted 38 minutes ago, as I just logged in to check that.
May have been up on our monitors (local lan), but not available to the outside....happens once in awhile.
Regardless, we can investigate the mnatter for you.
Fill out our online SLA form at:

and the incident will be researched, and a refund issued if falls within our SLA.
