View Full Version : What can we do with IP Addresses ?
Farrukh 03-26-2004, 05:54 AM Hi
I would like to know as what can I do with 5 IP address which we get from SM when I buy a dedicated server from them.
I heard that I can run 100 sites on 1 IP.
Can anyone explain since what will be the major difference since 1and1 gives away 1 IP for dedicated server
youandme 03-26-2004, 06:20 AM if u got 1 IP and u can host more than 100 site on it :) that's no problem cause that IP can be shared :) also u got 5 ips and u can host 20 site/ip (shared IP) or u can setup IP as executive.......
busy .............on the phone

We can assign them for private nameservers and SSL.
delirium 03-26-2004, 10:26 AM You can take them behind the bush and have your wicked way with them....
Farrukh 03-26-2004, 11:18 AM So for the private name servers we require 2 IPs such as ns1.domain.com and ns1.domain.com

thats what i do
I have about 40 or so i will never use
Boost 03-26-2004, 12:29 PM if you do hosting then yes u will need them most of the times as clients will ask for dedicated IP's. specialy for SSL.
any how if you dont use them just keep them a side.
rkuris 03-26-2004, 12:35 PM First, don't use spare IPs for duplicated services. For example, if you need two DNS servers, don't make them point to the same machine! That's just silly. The whole point of DNS is that there is a redundancy. There is no redundancy if they are the same machine.
For DNS redundancy, sign up at xname.org or twisted4life.com and use them as a free secondary.
Why anyone needs a dedicated IP address at this point is a bit confusing. Unless you want to still support very ancient browsers that don't do HTTP 1.1... can you say Mosaic?
Personally, I think having 5 IPs when you only need one is wasteful. No wonder we're being forced to move to IPV6 when 80% of the IPs are not in use for each dedicated server.
If you do have like 40 spare IPs, ask your provider if they want them back. They might be able to put them to good use.
Okay, I'll quit ranting!
Chrysalis 03-26-2004, 12:53 PM ip addresses are useful for irc vhosts and allowing more connections.

I never really got this reasoning. If the server goes down, it's true, the DNS won't work, but the server is down anyway, so who cares. I've never had an instance where just DNS went down and nothing else, so... Starting out it's perfectly fine, imho, but after you get more than one server you should start putting it on different servers.
ThomasC 03-26-2004, 05:56 PM Karl,
You could have a backup of the website on another server,
which when the first server goes down, the DNS would point to the other box.

Wbcoms 03-27-2004, 10:38 AM You'll need 1 IP for each site that needs a certificate (secure server - https://)
PhilJ 03-27-2004, 11:08 AM You really don't need to assign a new set of IP's for every set of private ns's that you configure. You can get away with having many private namervers pointing to 1 set of 2 IP's.
Imago 03-27-2004, 11:17 AM So, Thomas, what do you propose? To have our ns2 registered with some geodifferent DNS and make it point to our backup server?
DeltaGaming 03-27-2004, 02:41 PM Ip adresses is very useful for game servers hosting. Cause customers prefer to have servers on default port. Assume that default port is 27960 and if u want to host 10 gameservers on 1 machine you can set this way
64.191.106.10:27960 1st server
64.191.106.11:27960
64.191.106.12:27960 .......
64.191.106.19:27960 Last server
If you do this way most client only have to type IP adress to connect server which makes easier. Also you can assign a domain name i.e (uft.ufoclan.com) Once again players only need to memorize and type domain name to connect , otherwise if you have limited IPs setup would like
64.191.106.10:27961
64.191.106.10:27962
64.191.106.10:27970
And this causes alot of problem. People cant remember correct ports. They mistype and try to connect totally diffrent type of gameserver... Than they call you middle of the night and say "I cant connect my server!!!"
So if you ever plan to host game server get much as ip you can get. They useful and will save u from headache :) Just my 2 cents.
