Hello,

I just purchased a console cable and adapter originate from cisco.

I used Hyperterminal and used these settings:

Connect to: COM1

Port Settings:
Bits per second: 9600
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow Control: None

After I pressed "OK" it just show the prompt blink on a screen.
Nothing else.

Do you think there is something wrong with the switch?
How should it boot up?

I did the same to a router at a local community college, but after I pressed "OK", the router booted up.

When I do it to this switch, no OS boots..just the prompt blinks.

Anyone have a cisco catalyst 2924-xl-en switch?
Can you help me?

Have you tried this from a cold boot?

It is possible that the settings could have been changed. I can flip through the manual for one of our switches Monday and see if I can fing the hard reset info.

This is what I did.

I connected the console cable from the console port on the switch to COM1 on my pc. Then I turned the switch on, loaded Hyperterminal program, and put the above settings.

The screen I got is a hyperterminal screen with prompt blinks.

I put the same port settings as how I put it to connect to a router at school.

Just for ****s and giggles, try typing "?", no quotes, and hit enter at the flashing cursor......

Yeah, sometimes hitting enter or some other key will bring up a login prompt.

:) Enter :)

It worked.

After I pressed enter, it prompted me to enter IP, mask, gateway, and some other Yes/No question.

I just put number in it to test it out.
I didn't save it at the end.

I went out of the switch and went back in.

The prompt is now

Switch> _ <--------where the underscore blinks

Is there a way I can reinstall the OS of the switch to its original?
I want to use the switch for MRTG, where I need to assign an IP to it? How do I assign an IP to it? Do I need to assign it a netmask, gateway, and etc?

If you know any manual that shows command lines on cisco switch, can you post the url?

I'm too tired to look it up now, but go to Cisco's Site.. you'll find document on IOS there.

JTY or anyone,

Can you show me the steps to assign an IP to the switch?

Do I need to worry about the gateway, netmask, and etc, or do I need to put them in?

The manual syas to put "yes" on ...

Would you like to enter a default gateway address? [yes] y

What would happen if I put no on entering a default gateway address? Is it best if I enter a default gateway address?

How about this question?

Enter host name [Switch]:

Can I make up a host name or which host name should I use?

Which I want to the switch for MRTG, should I configure a Telnet password?

What is a cluster command switch? Should I enable it?

Tnanks!

asia, not trying to be mean, but if you dont know answers to these simple questions its probably best you leave the configuration of your switch up to someone who does.
