We are looking at upgrading to Redhat AS for our CP server for H-Sphere. I wanted to see what and why Redhat AS is really better than redhat 7.3.
Is it faster then 7.3, more secure?? For $1500 bucks I hope its a LOT better and more stable..

AS is supported by Red Hat. 7.3 is not. I know which one I'd choose (if those were the only two options).
Its going to be more secure as it will be updated. As for faster, maybe a bit but I don't know if anyone has done benchmarks

what do you mean 7.3 is not? You mean by Redhat or Psoft? Seems Psoft still supports it as far as there software goes.

As for performance, the only big win is the native thread support. This makes mysql have only one process, but many threads. This is a good deal for mysql.
Apache, as of yet, works better with the perchild model, so you probably will not see much benefit there.
One thing they did with the AS stock kernel is tune it up a bit. A lot of the settings are preconfigured higher. That means you COULD tweak the 7.3 kernel and get similar performance (but not posix threads I don't think).
My answer: Don't buy AS. Buy ES. You get everything AS has except it's cheaper. AS should only be used by corporations that require that level of support.

Well we had to AS due to dual xeon systems and they show as 4 CPU's :(
Dual is dual.. not quad.. xeons are supported by ES.. if you do a search.. you'll see there's been quite a few RHEL kernel probs.. not sure if its xeon or raid that was the problem.

But AS supports the xeons right?

Does it have some issues that 7.3 did not have? I was hoping for a little more speed and more secure as we can use FreeBSD because of java issues with H-Sphere on our systems.. :(

i just dont like its compatablity with things and theres lots of kernel issues with rhe
