View Full Version : going outta my mind!!!
ioenska 03-25-2004, 04:03 PM hi!
i'm new here.. my name is Candy, just so ya know... now, on with my post... :) lol
i've been with probably 8 or 9 hosts since last year... they all suck. i'm very frustrated. i have at least 15 sites that need to be hosted, and i need a reseller account, because i can't afford a dedicated server (yet). because 90% of the sites are mine. LoL
my main issue is webspace. i have 3 music and/or anime-related magazines and need some webspace for music videos & mp3's (that the bands give us to put on the site) and photos, etc.. i also have a band that i'm hosting that needs space for their mp3's & stuff.
so.. that brings me to the question... do any of you know of any GOOD place where I can find reseller hosting as inexpensively as possible?.. i need a place that offers streaming media, a fair amount of bandwidth & space & allows adult material... features like fantastico would be cool, too.. but not absolutely necessary.. and y'know... i'm a typical college student.. broke & stuff.. LoL so remember the inexpensive part.. ;)
okie dokie then.. thank you! :)
all the best,
~ candy ~
webmultitude 03-25-2004, 04:23 PM Just remember, you get what you pay for. :)
HasGreatDane 03-25-2004, 04:26 PM Streaming media, loads of bw & space at a low cost... :erm: I wonder if your previous providers gave you that and maybe that's why they were all... less than satisfactory. It has been said so many times around here that I don't even want to repeat the sentence that begins "You get...".
GDO
HasGreatDane 03-25-2004, 04:28 PM Doh, webmultitude, you beat me to it! :D
ioenska 03-25-2004, 04:34 PM yeah, i know, but, i mean... geez... i don't have all that much extra cash and i can't work 24 hours a day 7 days a week just to pay for my own server on top of school, rent, groceries, electricity, car etc... plus all the other bills... ya have to realize that, ya know...
and just fyi, not all my hosts had streaming media.. it just makes things a lot easier for me. but i don't absolutely have to have it. but it would be nice.
so..... lemme know if you can think of something... unless you just want to continue to be jerks to me, when i'm sincerely asking for your help... if that's gonna be the case, i'd rather you not respond at all. especially if you're just gonna keep repeating yourselves. i feel like i'm in a borg space ship.. lol

webmultitude 03-25-2004, 04:38 PM Give us some more specifics?
Also, try this:

:)
HasGreatDane 03-25-2004, 04:41 PM No need for insults...
Suggestion No. 1: if you can't afford what you'd like to get you might want to reconsider your position and/or priorities
Suggestion No. 2: a low-cost VPS will cost you around $35-50 per month which shouldn't be that difficult to cough up
Mind you, you still haven't mentioned what exactly you mean by "lots of bw & space".
ioenska 03-25-2004, 05:23 PM okay... first thing... low cost to me means $65.00 or under.
secondly, lots of space = at least 15 gigs, but would prefer more.
thirdly, lots of bandwidth = 70 gigs or more
one thing i absolutely must have is the ability to have adult material on the server. Adult material within reason, of course. No kiddie porn or warez or anything like that. Adult in my case means tasteful male nudes, due to the nature of one of my zines.. It also includes adult-themed lyrics, music & the like.
Most of my sites include indie music reviews, japanese indie music reviews, japanese rock video clips, japanese anime/hentai reviews, etc.. We also cover bands like Deadsy, Orgy, Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, etc and occasionally have permission to post music video clips & tape live performances from those kind of bands & we post clips on the site.
As for the indie bands go, we usually post 30 second to a minute audio clips on there & have the readers vote on who gets prizes we're offering, or, who goes to battle of the bands, etc.. so, that's why the streaming media thing would be helpful, but it's not absolutely needed.
some optional features that i would like to have:
fantastico (because they have a customizable message board that i like), rvskin (because some people i host are from japan), web mail (just because it's easier to check when i'm traveling or am overseas), built in FTP (again makes it easier to upload stuff to the server when i'm not at home or am on a hotel computer or something like that), and lastly streaming media- just because it makes my job easier & is easier for the reader.
and, note the *OPTIONAL* part.
honestly, i'd just like some place that is reliable. reliability comes before everything else. all this downtime & crud has got me extremely frustrated.
if you need any more information then that, ask & i'll tell.
thanks.

BF-Gary 03-25-2004, 05:29 PM Just a note if you have these popular sites and not making money from them then start using google adsense on them so you can afford better hosting.
ioenska 03-25-2004, 05:31 PM i'd get a dedicated server, but i can't really afford to fork over 300+ bucks a month for something like that... if you know of one for less that's good, then gimme a holler. i'd say anything from FREE (yeah right lol) to 100 bucks (doesn't have to be EXACTLY 100, a little over is okay) a month would be good. i can scrounge that up somehow. lol
thanks for your time! :)

ioenska 03-25-2004, 05:34 PM got any more ideas on how to make some cash?.. lol
revsorg 03-25-2004, 06:11 PM Have you fully explored the adsense suggestion?
ioenska 03-25-2004, 06:15 PM i have been looking at that since i read your previous post... :-D
HasGreatDane 03-25-2004, 06:30 PM 70 gigs of traffic for about $65 doesn't sound that unrealistic (even to a jerk like myself) but I seriously doubt that you'd get 15 gigs of space on a decent shared server or VPS for that money if you want an acceptable level of support, uptime and reliability.
ioenska 03-25-2004, 06:34 PM well, give me a few realistic price options for what i am wanting, so i can adjust my budget. also, please include a few good places to host with that fit what you respond with.
also, i didn't call you a jerk.. if you took it that way, then i sincerely appologize. i just felt like i was being picked on by 2 or 3 people when i was seriously asking for some help, not a hard time. but i'm fine now. :)
HasGreatDane 03-25-2004, 07:00 PM Don't take it as picking on you. You were asking for help and it seems I was not the only one who felt the best help you could get was a fair warning that your expectations might be unrealistic. If you have someone asking for help to try and do something dangerous, then what constitutes help? Do you help them find a way to do it or do you tell them not to try it? Back on topic: not many VPS or reseller plans offer 15 gigs of space but you can almost always negotiate a deal on a special plan. But be prepared that if you get 1 gig of space way below $10 then your provider might not be making too much money which means that they will have to cut down on something: either the quality of the server (overloading it) or support. You can't realistically expect them to lose money. I'd say most probably your best bet would be a dedicated server. I believe you can get an unmanaged one below $100/month, though it won't be top of the line. Search the managed servers forums or ask for a quote.
ioenska 03-25-2004, 07:21 PM okay, i just got PM'd & got offered the 15 gigs of space & 70 gigs bandwidth, with the features i mentioned (from what i understood), for $99.00 the first 2 months & $119.00 after that. and, i can pay for more BW & space as i need it. i think that's a purdy darn good deal... whaty'all think?.. (can't tell i'm from the south, can ya?.. LoL)

HasGreatDane 03-25-2004, 07:35 PM I think I'm a cynic, a spoiler and a money counter in one. At the rate you were offered your host would make $500-600 (or only slightly more) monthly on that server, which should cover the cost of the server, his business costs and his work on the server. He won't buy a brand new red Porsche with this profit margin, but maybe not even a Big Mac Menu for the kids every other weekend. If the server turns out to be reliable, then you made an excellent deal and your host will work for you for peanuts :-). If the server proves unreliable then you'll be back here in a short time, shopping for another deal.
vantasticman7 03-25-2004, 10:32 PM Candy,
I would recommend a host that offers both reseller accounts, and well priced dedicated servers. This way as your needs grow, and it seems like they are, you can stay with the same company a while.
